What's your least favorite plant?
Comments (35)Well, if the thread's going to be resurrected, I may as well weigh in here. I don't *hate* any plants, but I think I feel about palms (especially Chamaedorea and Kentia) the way other people feel about corn plants (Dracaena fragrans) -- I can appreciate a happy specimen if I see one somewhere, but they're so common I don't see much point in having one myself. Or something like that. I've had lots of bad experiences with palms before, too, which doesn't help. That said, I do still like lady palms (Rhapis) and fishtail palms (Caryota), though I don't have either right now. My love/hate relationship is with arrowhead plants (Syngonium): I don't think we're right for one another, they mostly just cause me grief, but since everybody *says* they're not that difficult, I keep trying. [insert scene of me and the Syngonium family hugging on one another while sweeping orchestral music swells in the background, with me saying through my tears, "I wish I knew how to quit you."]...See MoreCan we PLZ get some action around here? Your favorite?
Comments (30)Always fun to list faves, though I think the best is the one that's blooming now! My current summer faves: brunfelsia Isola (lactea x americana, I believe, though no one seems to know for sure)is a blooming machine: I should have taken a picture a week ago, over 30 blooms in a 12" pot! It does get mealy bugs in winter, but it can handle a bit of abuse. Aglaia odorata, aka rice flower: mine's now 3 ft. tall, and seems to bloom after putting out new stems. Interestingly, the fragrance was almost the same as a cymbidium sinense orchid that bloomed at the same time -- heaven to your nose! Trachelospermum 'Mandianum', aka asiaticum, aka whatever they're calling it these days: has stayed in the same pot for years, almost a natural bonsai at this point, keeps popping out small yellow flowers with a marvelous, soft fragrance. And you gotta love the way old leaves turn red before dropping, for that two tone effect! And last but not least, now that I've figure out I wasn't watering my MOO enough, it's blooming all summer long! Yellowthumb, brunfelsia in Ontario? Have you checked flora exotica? Enjoy the scents!...See MoreWhat's your least favorite Garden chore?
Comments (15)I love digging new beds - it's such an optimistic job. My *least* favorite chore is re-digging old beds, which I happen to be doing now, kicking myself all the while. Who knew that garden heliotrope, shasta daisies, campanula glomerata and siberian iris would all run amok in a mere 15 years. Toss in invading lawn grasses, annual weeds, and boisterous autumn clematis, compact firmly with carpenters' boots (while they are shingling the wall behind the garden), and you have a bona fide mess. No fun, no fun at all. Oh, I almost forgot. My really, truly least favorite chore is opening and paying my credit card bill. Shocking how much you can spend without even noticing - and on nothing but annuals and perennials. Makes squishing bugs feel like a picnic by comparison....See MoreWhat is YOUR Favorite (and least favorite) Lettuce?
Comments (8)I'm growing greens in large stock tanks this year on a deck, so can get some free from slug and vole predations for the first time. The lettuces are perhaps too crowded to form big heads, the arugula and the baby bok choy is bolting. An unusual green I'm enjoying is Brassica juncea, Ruby Streak and Golden Frill, from Evergreen seeds. The Ruby Streak is bolting, but the Golden Frill is larger and not bolting yet. It is making long leaves with lots of frill, finely divided, so it is quite crisp, yet still tender. I'm going to have to keep trying on the lettuce. I've found that some greens like Wild Red Kale, and turnips left in the ground for spring greens, need to be planted by July 15 in order to get large enough to make it through the winter. I had some excellent bok choy one year planted in the fall, but can't seem to duplicate it. It won't make it during the winter, though. A wild green I enjoyed up until frost last year and in early spring this year is Sheep Sorrel, for a sour lemony taste....See Morekwie2011
