Comments (12)I cannot, of course, speak for the NC governmnet, but I also do NOT believe the NC government's restrictions on collecting and export ultimately have a salutory effect on the survival of their native flora. Neither am I truly convinced that they are all that interested in actually protecting and preserving that flora. Even as they place obstacles for collection by even reputable botanical/horticultural institutions, they make no effort to stop rampant development, mining, and forest fires (some intentionally set) which utterly ravage huge areas of priceless flora, and only very meekly fund the most modest efforts at local propagation and preservation (although these modest efforts do constitute a major improvement over a decade ago). In all honesty, the collection/export restrictions have more to do with a desire to prevent other countries from commercially profitting from NC flora (as opposed to the NC's own commerical profits in horticulture which are negligible, and not being developed). "We don't want you to make money off our native resources." Throw in a dash of Anti-Americanism, a slavish, counterproductive adherence to IUCN paradigm thinking, and, voila. There you have it....See MoreMost rare conifer in your collection
Comments (84)I purchased it as P. Pungens 'baby blue' (you know the tags, "blue is cool blue is cool blue is cool blue is cool blue is cool"). It was only after a year or two that I noticed its branches were weeping. I think I planted it Nov 2014, but maybe Nov 2015. I do remember when purchasing it, it was different (I looked at every single one they had, probably over 200) but weeping never crossed my mind even though in thinking back I remember it looking about what it currently looks like. When I compared it to my 7 or so other P. Pungens 'baby blue', it was clearly different. I guess it would be considered a seedling with a mutation (or a mutated seedling?) ? The baby blue are grown from seed....See MoreAraucaria in coastal Georgia?
Comments (32)I bought a house about 3 years ago which had a tree that no one could identify.....finally a local Nursery Owner was at my property and saw it and said it was most definitely a "Monkey Puzzle" Tree. Araucaria Bidwillii I have since confirmed this. I live in Kingsland,Ga........300 yards from Florida right along I-95. This Tree appears to be about 100 years old as it is about 35-45 feet tall. It is in good health...as a matter of fact once I knew what it was....and how rare it was in this part of the world....I immediately had a couple small Water Oaks removed which were crowding it. It will now get much better air circulation. I can live with the razor sharp droppings now that I know I own such an unusual tree and have quite the topic of conversation. So,I can attest that this species can,and does, survive in Coastal Georgia....See MoreAraucaria seed search
