Yes, it can be done. There are several people on here who get hard to find florist roses and root them. However, even if you root them and they grow big enough to put in the ground that does not mean they will look like the ones you bought. The florist shop roses were greenhouse grown under ideal conditions and that is why they look that way. Once you plant it in your garden it's going to grow and bloom under what ever conditions you have in your garden. You have different soil, sunlight, heat, water and fertilizer than the greenhouse growers have. All of those things will effect the growth and blooming of the rose.

Good to hear that it can be done. As for getting the rooted roses to perform, I'll cross that bridge if I get there. :) I imagine they're perhaps more tender than the garden varieties, so I'd probably keep them in the greenhouse.

Any tips for ensuring a successful rooting? Do I need to cover the cuttings in the greenhouse with clear plastic? How long before I know if the cuttings have succeeded/failed? Can I add any nutrients to help things along?

Hi lauriescreams, I've used Hartwood Rose's method (http://hartwoodroses.blogspot.com/2013/05/how-to-root-roses-from-cuttings.html) with some success. I found that keeping the prepared cuttings outside in the shade provided greater success. I got a cutting from my brother-in-law in mid-June and just 2 weeks ago it showed some growth (that's 10 weeks!). I had it indoors for probably 6 weeks and once I put it outside it started to spring new growth. With the bottle top on, I only sprayed water inside two or three times over the 10 weeks as the condensation stayed pretty consistent the whole time the top was on it (the premise is to keep the cane moist as it has no roots without keeping the soil so wet the bottom of the cane rots). After a couple of weeks of letting the growth take off, I took the bottle screw top off keeping it in the shade. I then took the soda bottle top off for a week in the shade, and began slowing acclimating it to direct sunlight. It got a bit fried due to one day of neglect, but I'm hoping to still salvage it (poor thing). I asked Hartwood about nutrients during the cutting stage and the answer was no. I suppose we really want to give the cutting time to just grow roots so that it can eventually take in nutrients. How moist will the cane stay in your greenhouse? If you're unsure, some kind of plastic tent or the soda bottle top may work a bit better - but perhaps put it outside the greenhouse if it's hot in there. That's cool you have a greenhouse.

Oh it's hot in there, but while we're enjoying the hottest September in years, nights are still chilly. Keeping the soil moist doesn't seem to be an issue. My Blue Bajou cutting is still green in its pot, which I keep in roughly one centimeter of water. It's going on its third week, so I'm cautiously optimistic.

Thank you for the link. Some of it looks similar to what I've done. I didn't do the vertical surface cut at the end, but I'm hesitant about pulling up the cuttings. My cuttings do get some sunlight, but since they are not covered, maybe they won't fry? I'm guessing my timing isn't too good either. Though September is the hottest month so far here in Denmark, fall is just around the corner.

I'm trying cuttings in two locations. The greenhouse and indoors. The indoor ones have totally wilted despite having the same amount of water as the greenhouse ones, but the greenhouse ones look healthy even after three weeks. My Blue Bajou from early August seems to be producing some growth from the bud eye.

So here's my dilemma. The ones in the greenhouse seem to like the conditions there (warm days, cool nights, high humidity). But come November, they will get nightly freezes. I can't heat my greenhouse. Are my cuttings doomed?
