Anyone grow Hydrangea Paniculata ‘Dharuma’?

It's on sale at Klehm's Song Sparrow and might work well in a spot that I've been struggling to make look nice. I've never seen one in person. If you grow it successfully, what are the growing conditions? My spot is against a stockade fence and gets only 3-4 hours of direct sun, so I'm not sure if that is enough sun to make it flower well.

I know I could post this on the hydrangea forum but I thought I might get answers that were more accurate to New England here. Thanks!

I planted a Dharuma last fall, so it is finishing its first season in my garden. It has the lacier flowers that I like, similar to Quickfire, rather than the dense panicles of something like Limelight. Mine is in full, all day sun like pretty much all of my H. paniculatas, though currently it is somewhat shaded by tall phlox since the shrub hasn't grown tall yet, so I am not sure that my experience is of help to you.

I'd go ahead and ask on the hydrangea forum, specifiying which variety, but also commenting that you want info from folks at a similar latitude (there's one regular poster there from PA which would be similar) and similar light levels. IME all H. paniculatas have similar preferences so you can ask about the light levels in your heading. I think that 4-5 hours would be enough for good flowers since 6 hours is considered full sun, but the quality of the shade is important also. Is it bright shade from reflected light or dappled shade with some sun coming through leaves? Or is it dense shade caused by an overhanging dense tree? Is the sun only early and late in the day (less intense) or do you have some mid-day or afternoon sun?

Or you could just plant it and see how it does . . . do you have another spot you could move it to with more sun if it doesn't bloom enough for you?

Hi Redsox, It's OK - I don't mind talking about Limelight here, but then it's the Rose Forum!!! LOL! Anyway, I did not really prune my Limelight last year (it was planted just last year). However, though there were many blooms, the stems were weaker. I am going to prune it next spring, so that there will be fewer blooms, but the stems will be stronger and the blooms will be larger. If you search in the Hydrangea Forum, you will find some interesting and helpful information there. Some also recommended pruning some of the branches only, leaving the stronger ones behind, so you will have a nicely balanced plant that will be full and maintain a vase shape. I think it will grow back if you cut it to the ground, but the goal is to maintain a nice vase shape so you should prune it in such a way to achieve that. I also understand that with paniculatas, you should aim to achieve a strong, single-trunk structure too in order for it to look its best. Now, do you have roses as companion plants next to your Limelight? How tall and wide is your Limelight? How old is it?

Doing a google search on remontant hydrangeas, brought me to this thread. I own 'Wedding Gown' & 'Pistachio' or 'Glam Rock' as its known across the pond. Both hydrangeas do not get huge figure about 3' X 3'. 'Wedding Gown' I have noticed, in our zone 7 winters w/o protection dies almost to the ground and emerges with new growth in spring. The plant blooms on new wood. I have not encountered 'die to the ground' with 'Pistachio'. Both are well behaved in a Northern exposure and a Western exposure in the shadow of a magnolia.

Ugh, my comment did not read like I intended it to read. Sorry, pilarfish6. That is what happens when your dogs are asking for treats while you are on the computer! Hee hee hee. Picture this request: feed me, feed me, feed me because I am meeeelting... Ha! You gotta love them! Yes, you will have blooms by September. But Limelight first produces blooms with a lime color, which then turns white and finally, the blooms add a mix of pinks and-or greens as the blooms further mature. If your intention is to provide lime green blooms only, or white blooms only or late colors from late blooms then it becomes difficult to get the colors timed precisely. When the wedding comes, for example, the lime greens may have turned white or be transitioning to white and be a mix of colors. Or the white ones may have started getting blotches of green or pink. Sorry about that being unclear in the previous note. Mea culpa.

Hilda, so sweet of you to offer, I'm sending you an email. Ego, thanks for clarifying about the VS and PW. I am very surprised to hear how much growth the VS put on in one season. If the two varieties are so alike, I wonder if they take on similar fall coloring? I have seen the PW and thought the pink color turned a little darker than I was hoping for. I like the rose color the regular PG turns. That is some huge good looking PG! I have a house in our neighborhood that has PGs growing along two sides of their property in a straight line. They are behind a solid fen*ce now although they grow at least 5 ft above the fen*ce. They were visible with a previous post and rail fen*ce for a long time. They soured my desire to have one because they were awful any time of year except when in bloom and they were uncared for and they were bare 3/4 of the way up and had ugly ugly trunks. So it was really eye opening to see that photo of a well cared for PG. [g]
