deannagv: Nice looking project, but yes, a few of the gaps are a concern. Here's my suggestions- 1. Gaps 5, 4 and part of 3 should be covered by backsplash- I know you said that you are only running splash on the wall where gap 5 is, but I would wrap splash around the corner so it will cover gap 4. This (IMHO) will look more finished- regardless of whether there was a gap 4 & 3 or not. I would also do a splash on the left side to balance the "look". 2.Can the upper be shifted at all to split the difference in the size of the gaps between the stone and the walls, or is it set? the 3/8" gap is (again IMHO) a bit wide, however, it can be filled with polyester and colored to match the stone (IF you have a competant Fabricator and Install crew that HAS the skill sets to do that). 3.Re-making anything is the last resort, especially if there's no more stone left - IF there is enough material, this is a possible option, but I would give your Fabricator an honest chance to remedy the situation first - without having to resort to re-fabbing anything (unless of course HE brings it up first). In that case then, I'd let him remake the upper - it's easier to make something bigger and trim it down on the jobsite, as opposed to making it shorter and having to rely on the "stone stretcher" to solve the problem... ;-) 4. It's not unusual for gaps to exist between walls and stone - remember that homes "breathe" throughout the year, and your walls & cabinets will expand and contract at a different rate as opposed to the stone, so caulk joints are a fact of life in any application, however, 3/8" is a bit wide for my taste My .02 cents worth kevin Kevin M. This discrepancy should have been caught when the countertop guys templated the countertop. Are your walls that messed up, or is it because of a flawed cabinet installation? Regardless, a 1/2" gap is ridiculous. You can have a new top properly fitted. Bingo, problem solved. Is there a backsplash to be installed? That can hide a gap, with the exception of the gap at the end of the countertop. Depends on if that edge will be visible or not. Everything else is a compromise of sorts in that you can reduce the gap in the back but you overhang in front. You can slide it back but then your cabinet overhang at the front of the cabinets will be skewed. You can scribe the countertop as is, slide the entire thing back 1/2" to close the gap on the right. That'll give you even reveal on the front overhang, but it'll be 1/2" less front cabinet overhang than you have now. Or you can do a fraction of that 1/2". Slide it back 1/4" for a 1/4" gap on the back left, and lose 1/4" of overhang at the front of the cabinets. You can notch the drywall on the back right wall and slide the top back. Same effect as the previous recommendation, but you're notching the drywall instead of scribing the countertop. Another alternative is to use mud to float out the back wall. Essentially you're making the back wall "thicker" to bring the wall forward to meet the countertop. It'd have to be done in several steps, and you'd have to feather the half-inch thickness down over the run of the wall. But that also depends on windows on the wall and how the existing window trim will be affected. There are fixes and there are band-aid repairs. Mongo

Thanks - unfortunately they are unresponsive and the company no longer exists shortly after finishing the job (we had so much work done to an older house it took me a while to realize the little things that were done poorly - I've learned that lesson of how to choose folks to work on your home the hard way. I realize this seems like a glaring mistake but it was a gap that didn't bother me too much at first, but got worse when we recently had to shim up the counter which was also poorly installed. Thanks for the paintable caulk suggestion - maybe I should try a caulk backing strip (or whatever those are called) and drywall putty if needed for the gouged looking part, then caulk and paint?

You make a good point Hillside House and I have thought about that, I feel its a little of both. I don't have a lot of confidence in the countertop installers as they initially installed countertops that were too short and didn't go all the way to the wall. They tried to hide it but putting up a side splash (which I specifically indicated I did not want multiple times before they installed it). When I addressed the side splash needing to be removed they tried to convince me it would look better with it, then offered to remove it once I'm ready to do my backsplash. I stood my ground and said it needed to be removed before closing and thats when they admitted the countertops were too short. So, I don't have much confidence in them, but do feel whoever installed the cabinets should have taken the time to ensure they were level. Needless to say I am definitely fighting this and won't close until it is fixed properly.
