Need help with large (23x15) Family Room design

We recently moved into our new house and I am finding the large family room to be very difficult. This is the room that we always use the most as it has a door to the garage so one of the main entrances for our family and it is right off the kitchen. I want to keep the two sofas that I already had and the new rug I just bought. But we need some storage to hide all the electronics for the TV and also some sort of organized drop zone/mudroom as it is the entrance from the garage. The ceiling is tall but the paneling is running in two directions which I love but it also makes me feel that the furniture can not go over the paneling. I am really confused on what to do. Please help!

  • Need storage near fireplace for electronics to be hidden. (was thinking that this need to be white given the colorful rug, didn't want to go higher than horizontal paneling that is 30 inches high. Have 47 inches in length on both sides of fire place as i was thinking it would be nice to get two of the same so there is some balance.)
  • Need new chair for corner to go between sofas, that goes with sofas but doesn't compete with rug. Wanted something comfortable as well.
  • Need some sort of drop zone/mudroom that fits in with open room, so it doesn't look out of place but somewhere we can drop mail and bags (maybe even shoes!).
  • Need a new rug for in front of garage door that goes with larger rug and maybe extends to sliders, still really confused with this as I want some sort of drop zone/mudroom here too (garage door is going to be replaced it is just an odd size so it has been difficult).
  • Need to do something near slider in corner where boxes are to help balance the room.

Any advice is welcome, really having a hard time with this room and my furniture is drowning in this room need to get some balance

    1) if you don't *have* to hang the TV over the fireplace, I suggest not -- it's not really what you want to feature, and that ends up being too high for most people to watch comfortably. You have nice walls on either side of your fireplace that would work better and allow the use of a nice console for all the bits -- I'd put it on the right, so you can arrange your main seating to encompass TV and fireplace, leaving the entry end (?) separate (see below).

    2) you don't have to press furniture up against the wall. Group it into comfortable seating/conversational units, even if that means some furniture has its back to the rest of the room.

    3) long rooms usually need to be subdivided. Maybe you can set up one end as a combination mud room (bench, shoe bins, coat hooks, or even build some closet) and something else -- desk area or game table or even just a reading nook with a lamp and bookcase.

I'm having a hard time visualizing the layout of this space, but if you can sketch a floor plan with all the doors and windows and fireplace, you'd probably get some specific suggestions on how to arrange things...

What a wonderful room and beautiful rug. Can we loose the wallpaper and paint???? Also why is all the furniture smashed up against the walls, it doesn't seem too conducive to conversation.

Is there a tv? What will you being using the room for most of the time? It sounds like a lovely space with lots of light. You could go in a number of directions with color. I would probably plan on two chairs rather than just one, but it would help if you could post a picture. We have a space of about that size in which I have four comfy, but not huge chairs around a round coffee table.

Thanks! Sadly I’m not sure what you’d call my style. But I like simple clean style. Cozy and a tad eclectic. I’m so confused when trying to style the house but when I look at pictures I know what I like. It’s just been so hard to make it happen because I think I may need to pick one to move forward. These photos look nice to me.

Can you post photos without the distortion, including a straight-on photo that shows the basket and mirror? I can't make them out well enough to have any sense of what would go with them.

And take down the drapes and rod for the time being. You can save, but right now a huge distraction along with the wallpaper. I'd pull a color out of the rug in a lighter shade to put on the walls. Love the wainscoting. Your huge leather sofas are a bit much for the space, one would be fine, but two??? You need comfy chairs instead of sofas.

bellburmaggie- Thank You!! There is no wall paper, the walls are really nice wood paneling which I didn't want to take down as it has so much detail in it. We just had it professional painted it was a very dark wood stain that wasn't in good condition before. acm- Love your ideas about separating the room but so confused on how I would proceed this, I will send over a sketch of the layout. My husband had the electrical done to install the TV over the fireplace as it is the center of the room so I think we need to stick with that option. The room feels so large and empty.

this is the rough layout the room is really pretty dark and large

this is what the room looked like before we bought it walls were grimy and needed to be sanded anyway and it was so dark so we wanted to lighten the walls. I loved the paneling too much to get rid of it all together as it is really nice quality to it and the pattern is nice. But I feel like the room is busy between the walls and rug so need to bring in things to tie it all together without being overwhelming. I have searched all over Houzz for ideas but can't find anything similar.

Your painted "board and batten" paneling looks wonderful painted and it brought light to your space. That is not cheap sheet paneling from the seventies but the real thing nailed in place one board at the time.
You also have a beautiful rug from which you can pull color for your room. Consider a chest for each side of fireplace. It will hide your TV stuff and be good storage.

I love color and your carpet. For your dark sofas, bring them off he wall into an L shape to fireplace.

    how large is the rug?

111ideahound- love the white bookcase. And love the idea of the dark wood feet with white, i feel like that would be a great balance and blend nicely. Love the padded leather chairs, it will go great with my two sticky kids! :)

beautiful woodwork, looks like the brick could use some love as well
since fireplace and tv now focal point center rug and furniture on that, love sofa off wall, hard to see distance from fireplace and that wall

BeverlyFLADeziner- the rug is 9x12, was really hard to find that big of rug in a style I wanted. The rug is bit beyond my comfort zone but I love it so really want that to be the statement of the room.

Jennifer Havin- agree need to figure out how to clean it up, don't think I want to paint it as my husband thinks we will use it in the winter (we live in the NorthEast)

    Ok, start with these:

    1) add one or two chairs facing the couches, to close the U shape of that seating arrangement. that will help make that zone feel like a cozy arrangement rather than the end of a long empty space. I think you could have two with a nice round table in between, maybe a lamp.

    2) long substantial coffee table in front of the longer couch. not black! this could be a good time to bring in some wood tone, or even a color if a painted table fits with your overall style.

    3) end table at other end of love seat, with a reading lamp -- bring in some color there or some metallic shimmer.

    4) next to garage door, put an entry table, with a bowl for keys and mail, maybe a drawer for gloves, and a nice picture or mirror over it.

    5) get some art in here! move the clock between the windows, about 18 inches lower, and get a long horizontal piece of art for over the big couch. dark frame ok, but bring in some sunshine and color otherwise!

    6) use the corner opposite the garage entrance as your mudroom. don't know how big your family is, but an easy start might be one of these upright storage benches, so that people could hang coats on the hooks and put shoes on a mat underneath. (later, when you're less overwhelmed, you could do something more substantial in that corner. but this will get some utility in there and get you through.)

Also, because you're going to ask your family to come in the garage door and cross the room to take off their coats and boots, you should probably plan to get a substantial (and welcoming!) runner to connect the two zones. Or some combination of runner and mats, as climate dictates.

acm- love this idea, never though about using that bare corner for the bench/mudroom. Really like the idea of putting some chairs at the end to help close up the room in a U around the fireplace. Love the idea of the clock between the windows think that wall is better suited for it. My husband has some electronics for the TV that need to stay close to the TV. Do you think if I have table for the keys/drop zone, would be odd to have a chest or something on the other side of the fireplace, would it through balance off?

acm- for the runner do you think I should get the same as the current rug or just go with a solid color that matches? We were thinking of a runner as it would be helpful having it front of the sliders as well, as we always take our shoes off in the house.

It's a nice size room and lining up all the furniture around the perimeter makes it looking like a waiting room. Since you have radiators at the sliders, you can't put any storage there, but I think you could install a wall mounted coat rack/hoods just at the entrance from the garage with a walk off runner. Then on the other side of the fireplace position a cabinet to hold the electronics with art mounted above. (Green Line) Art positions are also shown on either side of the sliders and between the windows.

I have readjusted the position of the furniture, which now allows a full wall of storage along the back wall. You could be creative with what you select Could be cabinets with doors or opening shelving like you see below with library swing arm lamps positioned above the segments.

Positioning the lounge chair in this new location will allow for the purchase of a recliner or chair with ottoman if desired. I have added an accent table next to the chair for convenience.

The original room was a dark box with white furnishings and now you have created a white box with dark furnishings. Not sure the change was a huge improvement, though I'm sure the black sofas in the dark room couldn't have been a solution for the room.

Maybe matching the unique soft red or blue from the lovely area rug and using it in the draperies, art, storage cabinets or paint above the chair rail could be an option for the room together so it appears more pulled together.

BeverlyFLADeziner- thank YOU! Agreed the furniture fit our old place and it isn't old and we still have young children so we can't really go with a light color at this time for the sofas. We realized that our furniture would look terrible up against the dark paneling of the original. We are hoping that by adding in a new chair with ottoman and some sort of furniture storage. That those pieces can help brighten and balance the room. Having a hard time finding an chair with ottoman to fit in with the room, I would even be willing to do a recliner if it was the right kind. Love the idea of the back library wall, that would be such a beautiful feature and nice balance.

Good, I'm glad this help you with your room. Since you only really need one chair or recliner, shop the Labor Day sales and clearance rooms. It shouldn't be too hard to find just one. As for the storage, cabinets, don't discount IKEA Besta system or even the kitchen cabinet system. Not sure of the current finishes they offer. The cabinets do not need to go all the way up the wall. Sometimes a wall of cabinets at about 60" can be nice because it allows for art and artifacts to be placed above the cabinet.

BeverlyFLADeziner- also I agree I think I am going to switch out the curtains for something that matches the rug. We had the entire house painted before we moved in so will have live with the paint choice for a while and it matches the rest of the downstairs as well. You gave so much helpful information thank YOU!

With such a big family room, it is important to keep the open feel. Whatever couch you add to the room, perhaps you put it on a raised plat form. Make sure the platform has padding on the front incase their are littles ones. Because the wall is so big, perhaps a bigger tv to help the space. On the wall as well long vertical floating shelves which can display family photos.

BeverlyFLADeziner- love the besta system, we had a white one in our old place but it didn't work with our new place so we had to sell it. But never thought about putting something on the opposite wall if I pull the furniture away from it. Really want a nice/comfortable but good looking chair for the room as I am sure it will be used constantly.

bturner, Beverly's floor plan is perfect. Please center the rug on the fireplace/TV and then move your furniture off the walls and onto the edges of the rug. That will make a huge difference right away.

Do you need toy storage as well as storage for TV components?

    bturner12 thanked groveraxle

groveraxle - I need storage for the TV components. I have basket for the toys there is normally not that many there but my in-laws are visiting and they like to play in there when they are around. But need storage for sure, especially for mail and drop zone.

Question though can I have furniture that goes above the chair rail, I would think very tall is fine but right above the chair rail might look odd? All pictures I look at the furniture that is up against the wall doesn't go above the chair rail, so really confused with this. As my chair rail is 30 inches high.

Yes to console on right of fireplace, yes to solid or loosely coordinating runner. Pulling in the furniture also seems great. Go, team! :)

I don't think the green pillows do anything to enhance your rug. I'd stick with ivory, pink, and teal. Here are your sofas moved off with wall, with art and curtains and a larger coffee table.

    bturner12 thanked groveraxle

bturner, you shouldn't end up with any furniture against the chair rail except for a console by the garage door and perhaps a hall tree or armoire to hold coats and hats and shoes. I'd keep the console table just below the chair rail.
