over or under watering? more or less sun?

This succulent was always green with hard leaves, now the bottom leaves are mushy and slightly yellow and the ones up top started to turn this pink/ purple color. Let me know what I should do to save it!! also the one on the left's root is brown

Based on the coloring and the etiolated appearance, it would seem that the plant needs more sunlight. I'm not sure about whether it's over- or under-watered, since it's sometimes hard to tell with succulents, but I'd err on the side of over-watered and not water it for a while.

My ovata is in full winter sun (up here in the north) and does well, in summer it gets to go outside in morning sun. my afra gets "shaded" winter sun (under sun reflective coated glass) and then out with the ovata in summer. Both do well, so maybe like cactusmcharris says, it doesn't make a difference.

Japanese Maple 'Atropurpureum' in zone 5: more SUN or less??

I have a Japanese Maple in my front yard (I'm also zone 5). I think that they prefer morning sun and afternoon shade (afternoon sun is too hot). I planted my maple during early summer and in the evening so I miscalculated where it was going to get more of the afternoon shade so it gets more of the HOT sun which is not what I intended. It has been where it is now for 2 years so I figured that so far so good, right? They like lots of water so I give it about an inch to 2 inches deep of water once a week and also the sprinklers hit it in the wee hours of the morning. I hope this helps. Good luck.

Here again, what you have demonstrated confirms what I have been talking about and you have proven the so-called expert (saying that you need 10 t0 12 hours of sun) WRONG No one ever said that. And except for you, everyone else understood what was actually said. Shelia - as michael explained very well there is a variance in internode length from variety to variety and type to type. There are "averages" determined by studies done on many of the common varieties but the usual way of evaluating it is to measure the difference between the internodes on the plant itself as it grows. With an indeterminate variety when it is provided with ideal growing conditions and ample light they will each remain approx. the same length, have the same spacing, as the plant grows. With insufficient light each internode markedly lengthen as the stem grows. Is there a spot where they can get a few hours of full MORNING sun? About six to eight hours would be ideal. Lots of sun but not the intense afternoon heat.

Issue 1: Succulents and moss don't go well at all together. It holds in moisture where the succulents want it the least. Does the pot have a drainage hole?

Issue 2: Your succulent doesn't have enough light to maintain a healthy stem that can support itself. Usually these are full sun plants.

Issue 3: Too much water. It sounds like these plants have rot. In this case, its best to cut the rot away until you reach healthy, green stem. Then, let it callus for a few days before planting it in a pot-this time without moss and more light if possible. Rot can spread up the plant, so its best to do this asap. Good luck!

the pot doesn't have a drainage hole which I noticed the other day. It has been getting more sunlight then it has before so I'm not sure why now it is needing more, would you recommend replanting it in another pot? It seems like a pretty large plant to be in this small of a pot.

Definitely a pot with drainage hole.

Definitely well draining mix.

And definitely more light - your plant is very etiolated (stretched). Succulents just need lots of light to grow the way they should (and look much better) - indoor light is most often not enough.
