Suggestions on colored pencils

Would like to get my sister a delux set of pencils for her coloring . I know next to nothing about coloring. Pretty sure they are not the crayons that we had 60 years ago. Any suggestions about brands or number of pencils that is practical would be appreciated. I remember how exciting it was to get the big box of crayolas.

I have a lot of different pencils, gel pens and Crayolas. I find that with the pencils you can do a better job of shading, but the gel pens are easier on the wrist. Some of the pencils are wax based and will break when dropped. I have heard you can put those in the microwave for a few seconds and when cool will be okay again. I have not tried that. I have a nice set given to me that is oil based, those too are nice. She should have fun with whatever you chose. I have not had much time to color as life is keeping me too busy.

Does she use colored pencils or the gel pens so many seem to use?

That's what I was going to ask. I don't like the color pencils I prefer the gel pens. I got a really nice 100 pen set at Costco for $20.

I'm sure you have tried something like this: I have PhotoShop Elements (not PhotoShop)and went into Filters>Artistic>colored pencils (I did the whole picture however, and I know you are interested in something a little more complicated than that. Here is what I have just done with a picture of a local hotel: (original picture) (Using colored pencil filter) You can probably find a few PhotoShop forums on the web - maybe I can find something for you.. I guess now I would do schluter but too late it needs to be done before the tile and your installer should have known that. I also do not like those tiles with the wall tiles but that is another thing all together . I also never understand why people want to high light shampoo bottles. What is the waterproofing behind those tiles ?

please delete the other post. Schluter needs to go on with the tile, since it sits in the groove. can you still do that? looks like your mosaic is all finished for this style, a schluter would look best. the other option is doing solid pieces like the shelf all around the inside instead of the tiles. shown here: Also, make sure that shelf in the niche is sloped downward. it looks too level. water will collect and sit against the tile. how was this waterproofed? what's going against the ceiling?

There are several great brands and they all have slightly different characteristics. Hopefully cpartist will respond, she is an artist and I think she specializes in pencils. Here's some info that may help you get an idea of the options (pencils). Cheap Joes (cheapjoes.com), blick (dickblick.com) are two online sources. Caran d'Ache makes a line called Luminance Lightfast pencil sets, $65 for a set of 20. Prismacolor has nice pencils (couple of different lines, watercolor pencils, student set, premier line, erasable, etc.) set of 24 runs from $16 to around $36; set of 150 gift box is $150. FaberCastell, set of 24 are $39; Derwent and Koh-I-Noor are also quality brands. Have fun!

You can get huge sets of the gel pens on Amazon for pretty reasonable too, I've bought a couple of them there for my DD.

After trying most of them, I've decided that I like Prismacolors best. You can buy a set, or order individual pencils on Dickblick.com.

Thanks for helping me decide. I will look for the Costco set, to start, and see how she likes the pens. Did not realize there were lots of choices.

Prismacolor is very good. A friend of mine is a locally well known artist, and that is her choice of brands for pencils. She does beautiful portraits and landscapes with them. I am just learning to 'paint' with colored pencils, and just for the heck of it, I bought one of the adult coloring books. Also some Crayola pencils and another cheapy brand Walmart had. They are sort of okay, the Crayola brand is okay, but there is all the difference in the world between either of them and the Prismacolor. They are a joy to use! You might go to the Dick Blick website and read about the different brands, their quality, and their attributes. If your sister is serious about her coloring and does a lot of it, I strongly recommend a good quality, artists' grade pencil.

I, personally haven't tried the gel pens yet, that's next on my agenda.

Prismacolor makes the best. Love mine - and they're used by the few architects who still hand-draft and hand-render projects. :)

We did not get the artistic gene in our family. She just colors to relax. Prismacolor sounds great, but not necessary for her hobby. Will look at the Dick Blick website. Thanks for your help.
