How to make this piece look more rustic modern?
Comments (37)The OP asked how to make it RUSTIC. MODERN. Nobody is suggesting it can't be used. Just don't try to re invent the actual piece unless the reinvention works.. Juxtaposed in a setting that is contrary? Fine. The reason the photo below works? ALL in the room is in intentional modern contrast with more "ancient" surroundings. It is not in any way a mish mash of try and fail. Want to lacquer the secretary white with a magenta interior? Use it in a "she she" room with a zebra hide rug? ? Great. !!! Depends the what, and the where: )...See MoreHow do you feel about bead board?? Cabin remodel!!
Comments (7)I love beadboard. I do think Sophie has a valid point about competing lines ,to me if you did the backsplash differently it may not be a problem. One thing to keep in mind is that light painted surfaces shows lots of dirt, something we see a lot of in the woods. I redid my "camp" (that's what we call it in Maine), using lots of beadboard and have a bunch of inspiration plus before and after saved on one of my Pinterest boards. Forgive all the clutter there, I didn't really understand Pinterest organization when I first started using it.Branch lake board...See MoreVictorian meets rustic - design dilemma!
Comments (33)Wow -- great ideas are flowing in! I wish I had your vision -- then I wouldn't need to ask for advice - lol! ;-) Excellent! @Elaine Ricci - wow - what a beautiful lodge - you nailed it! And I would love to go there some day. :-) It must be an incredible vacation destination. @localeater -- thanks! :-) and the Danes love the place too. Excellent idea!! - rustic white would look incredible with the dark floors and mahogany - and wouldn't scream 'over the top rustic' (or 'park bathroom look' - lol!) And I love the quilt idea too. Thank you!! @eandhl2 - I've waited 10 years to finally call it home :-) Fortunately it was close enough for weekend get-a-ways or mini vacations -- but to know that I won't have to go 'back to the city' someday, will be a dream come true (but that may be awhile off with all the de-cluttering I have to do in my old house -- oh my - when will it ever end! :-). Hopefully the ol' gal sells quickly this spring - summertime is ideal at the lake. Yes - and very peaceful -- no boats allowed except kayaks and row boats or small electric ones for fishing. I do love it - T111 and all! :-) @pennydesign - hmmm...what a concept - embrace the contrast! I like it! I like the suggestion photo too - cool! :-) @J Williams - another great idea! I may even have some of that stuff already. :-) But listening to you all - with so many incredible suggestions, I am certain painting is first on my agenda. I think that was where my struggle was coming from -- imagining anything against such a 'charming' backdrop of T-111 was just throwing me for a loop. Doing some research, there have been some folks that suggest skipping the removal part and just affixing the drywall right on the 'paneling' -- while others say, if you are going to do it, do it right -- and it will give you a chance to see what's behind those walls. More to think about -- but I'm really starting to seriously consider trying the paint route first. All say it is a huge amount of work, though, so I'm not sure what is best -- if nothing else, if it does take too much work or looks terrible, then decision is made - drywall over it. Again, thank you so much -- I am inspired and uplifted....and so happy some of you enjoyed my story. Thank you for your kindness. :-)...See MoreRustic + Traditional + Modern = Fun Eclectic Combo, or a Mess?
Comments (31)decoenthusiaste: Those images are great, thanks for the ideas - the middle one is especially fabulous. Love everything about it, that's really up my personal alley... haha! Thank you all for your kind words and support... this journey hasn't been the easiest, but they're deserving of our help and we truly want to see them happy in their new place. :) KW: You are so right, estate sales are a major source of furnishings for me and always have been just because I love finding pieces I couldn't get elsewhere. Mom is a fan of some things we've come across. Currently on the hunt for a dining table/chairs. Checking out our local consignment stores for those. Also, another development, dad has finally convinced mom to let go of her curvy black floral sofa!! We sold it last week and she's putting that money away for a new leather sofa they'll buy down the line. They do have a matching burgundy sofa and chair (I'll post pics once they've been moved into the home) that they'll be using for the time being. The home is currently being painted! Final choice for all over paint color ended up being Casa Blanca by SW. Here it is: Kitchen cabinets are being sanded down and are currently being repainted as well, as the paint that was on the cabinets was pretty scratched up. One day, I hope to save up enough to gut that kitchen and replace the cabinets... but at this point, a refresh will have to do. Colors chosen for the kitchen cabinets from my narrowed down options (primarily by mom, who's super opinionated and tough to argue with lol), are as follows: SW Dover White for top cabinets: SW Clary Sage for bottom cabinets: Another decision made so far, is for the dining area chandelier: Dad annexed mom's original sputnik idea, but they agreed upon this simple fixture: Now, the trouble is, since she couldn't have her sputnik, she's not agreeing with his antlers for the living room (LOL), so we're stuck without a decision where that chandelier is concerned. Upon walking into the home, both lighting fixtures will be visible as they're in the same space. Any recommendations/ideas as to what may work with the overall theme taking shape so far, that would work with the above chandelier? I'm thinking either two of the same fixtures, or another that's very different in shape. Some thoughts would be appreciated. :) Hope everyone's enjoying what's left of the week! <3...See MoreRelated Professionals
