If it's variegated then yes, in a heartbeat. If it's lack of nutrients, then it's a waste of money. They so hard to find, sometimes you just got to take a chance. If it's a BBS then they have a good return policy at least, if it turns out not to be variegated. I hope it is truly variegated for you!

That's the reason I left it. While truly variegated, i noticed most of it was green but for a few leaves. As the miles between us grew, i got to thinking about needing to cut off growth not nicely variegated & decided to let it go.

I recall someone on this board mentioning that the variegate was rare, however very unstable.

I purchased a nice one on Ebay and looked very good. It fell off the porch railing while I was sick and when I saw it, it was only a stump. Grew back all green. Made me sick again.

Didn't take an updated photo yet. But it grew back all green with still the red tips.

With more sun (and a hard life) you will get back the colors.I think your gollum was not a variagated one, but nicely colered up by sunexposure.

It is always a bit difficult for each individual plant to find the right balance. The nice thing of succulents is that you can permit yourself (little) mistakes in caring and that the plants react with mostly mild punishments :) They give you signs enough to change regimes in time.

I agree, Anton. €30 isn't much. Our hobby is a cheap one. Look what people spend on takeaways, drink, all kinds of worthless stuff.

You are getting other plants (common?-inexpensive?) and a container :)

The rooted cutting was about 3" tall, in the arrangement, there were a couple of other common cuttings too.

I'm almost sure i won't go back for it.

I agree that 30$ is not much to spend for a plant, however one with an unstable variegate, purchased JUST for the variegate, is a deal breaker.

I poured over the pics repeatedly and it disturbed me that, of the 15 or so leaves on the cutting, only 3 were variegated.

In addition to that, of the 5 or 6 identical arrangements, NONE of them contained a variegated hobbit.

Hmmmm...o jeez.

I think i talked myself into going back for that darned cutting.

Oh, I see, thanks Rina. Yes, I see now I made a typo, sorry, I meant $30 I find you can never go into a garden centre or florist without spending at least that.

I had my Gollum in full sun this summer and the red tips are nice but no yellow what so ever. The green is darker now. That gollum was worth maybe $5 or so. I have spent some $300 in nurseries when I was planting up my yard. Twin tri-color beech trees, 3 dwarf red-leaf birch trees several hosta and so on. Money goes fast but I don't drink, party, or do drugs. Thinking back over my life, maybe I should have. (joke)

But really, what price do you put on yourself for pleasure. This is really cheap when you consider all things. As long as it doesn't cut into your charities to others more in need.

There were a bunch of other gollums in the arrangement, as well as other common succulents that I already have. I just added each one to the community pot to which it belonged =)

A few were rotting, so I cut off roots and set them in dry gritty.

The second I got it in the car, I took it apart.

The first variegated of any plant started with just a stem cutting of an old bush that grew a variegated stem. Cut and grew on it's own to produce whole bushes of variegated stock.

I just couldn't wait to get it apart. The container had no hole and the dyed moss offended me, lol. I resisted the urge to toss it over my shoulder, right, then left as I pulled the wee plants from the container.

In fact, please picture me doing so, because in my head, that's what it looked like. I think that counts!

The funny thing is, the girl at the counter asked if it was real =0

The lady on line behind DH commented on how it can't be real....I stayed well away because I. can't. even. DH loves it when I stick him in plant stores with chatty plant women =D

When I first spotted it, I asked DH to go ask the man if I could just have the cutting & he could replace it with another, or if I had to buy the whole arrangement.

Should've seen the look on DH's face, but, bless his heart, he did it =)

Of course the answer was, sorry, the boss himself put that together, you have to buy the whole thing.

I'm getting to the age where I don't mind embarrassing DH, lol!

Look on his face is just priceless, that's what he gets for not holding my bag, everrrrr =D

Here it is all potted up in a 2" pot.

Upon closer inspection, the majority of the leaves on this piece of plant all have some variegate, the most being half cream, the least being streaks.

I took this as a good sign ;)

Thanks for the maintenance advice Stush! I've been searching out old GW threads about doing just that.

Have read that leaf cuttings either go white or green, but rarely a mix of the 2.

This piece has 2 branches, one where all leaves bi-colored & a smaller one. where leaves are a lighter green that I can't be sure of.

Planning to allow to grow unfettered until more leaves develop.

You did very well!!! Although the variegation is unstable, that is actually variegated and looks good. You would well pay that just for your plant of interest! So this ended up in a mixed planter? Most likely it was doomed if you had not gotten it. The variegates of tube jades are rare and that is a very nice find. Please keep us updated!!!

I'm happier with it than I thought I'd be. The instability was what gave me pause, then i got to thinking how lucky it was that it's oddity seemed to be missed by someone.

Maybe i should be careful on the road, haha!

Hello Stush, your plant is indeed a Red Horn Tree as suggested earlier. They do go through several colour changes throughout the seasons so hopefully you will get those colours nice back again....and soon :-) RHT's generally have much larger/longer leaves than the regular Gollums, and as far as I'm aware, don't have that annoying trait of reverting properly like true variegates do....they just lose it temporarily!

Stush, I 've seen your RHT mislabeled as variegated jade & also have this plant, thanks to the keen eye of another member (wave Manny!!)

It is hard to come by on it's very own right.

For me, the allure of it was the graduation of green to yellow to red.

Colors up beautifully from pics I've seen & I'm certainly hoping mine puts on a show as temps drop. This is my first Summer & now upcoming Fall with it.

Wow, I hope mine gets that nice yellowish tones back. That plant is impressive.
