What is happening with these boxwoods? (pics)
Comments (9)The very teeny tiny red mites I see on the impatiens (2 of which have no more leaves left) do spin webs... see link below. They are about 2 ft. away from the porch, so there is no one walking by them, no one mowing by them.... and I water the planters right into the soil---so there is no water spilling on them. The mulching---now, that could have been an issue. Just made me wonder when a man at the nursery mentioned "Well, spider mites don't just hop up onto your impatiens... look around, what is nearby--where could they have come from." Only thing by them is the boxwoods, 2 of which are damaged. Just want to head off any issue this time from the start--if there is indeed one. If I had caught the impatiens earlier I might have been able to save the gonners. Here is a link that might be useful: spider mites...See MoreWhat's killing my Boxwood shrubs sections? see photos
Comments (4)unleess you give us your name and password.. we arent getting past the sign in page.. and i dont recommend such WAG.. ants take advantage of already dead wood.. they rarely... kill things.. IF they are ants ... and if you have all this dying.. why are you replanting the same thing??? one of the big problems.. of a vast monoculture.. like a long line of boxwood .. is that once you have a problem.. its going to work its way thru the whole ... any chance.. since they are sounding overly mature.. that these used to be in full sun .. and now they are struggling.. as the deciduous trees have cast them in shade??? and even worse.. are the trees maples???? have the ever been rejuvenated??? perhaps i missed it in your flurry of posts.. but are you new to this garden... ken...See MoreWhat is wrong with my potted boxwoods?
Comments (4)It's impossible to know for sure with the given information, but I would strongly suspect a soil moisture problem. Watering a potted shrub "every week" is not gonna work! If you watch what nurseries do, they are watering their plants EVERY day in hot weather like we are having. You might get by with watering every other day, but not once a week! If you are using water retaining gel, or something like that to extend the time between watering, then you almost certainly have a serious drainage issue, even if the top of your soil appears to dry out quickly....See MoreWhat's killing my boxwood and Thujas?
Comments (8)in the intervening years.. have the arbs ended up in full shade ??? that might be one explanation for the thinning.. and overall decline ... and once they decline ... lose vigor ... then other things might attack .. sooo ... solving the secondary problem.. might not return vigor ... also ... if the shade trees happen to be highly aggressive super competitors .. like maple... they might not be getting the water they are used to ... especially if there has been severe drought.. in any of the last few years ... it is not uncommon ... for a conifer ... to look bad after winter ... but its not necessarily winter that did it ... the insult or problem could have occurred anytime in the last year.. thats why i mention drought ... its a 'tree time' issue ... things just dont happen this fast with conifers .... i dont do boxwood ... because of all the inherent issues with them ... sometimes its easier to divest.. rather than invest in working with a problem plant ... if it were me.. i would cut out all the dead stuff .. see what happens this year.. and if it lacks vigor.. be done with it in fall ... in the alternative.. after cutting out all the dead .. if it was ugly as sin.. i might just do the removal now ... lifes too short to screw around with a boring old green plant that doesnt flower.. and needs to be sheared all the time.. you can do so much better.. imo ... ken...See Morefloral_uk z.8/9 SW UK
