Alicia, around here you can buy bags of long fiber dried sphagnum moss at garden centers -- I've even seen it at Lowe's, too. That's what I use. I just rub it through a strainer, the ordinary kind with a handle you can buy in the kitchen tools section of a grocery store. It's the same moss as florists use, just dried. If the potting mix stays too moist or drainage isn't sufficient, add perlite. Don't worry about the seemingly big size of the perlite relative to the tiny seed. The sphagnum moss (or live moss, like Mainegrower uses) gets the seed going and then it roots down easily into the medium below. It seems to me azalea seedlings likes a lot of oxygen in the soil and not too much wet. Once they get beyond a certain size it becomes less critical. The other thing to do is make sure your containers have as many drain holes as you can reasonably punch in the bottom. I use an ice pick and put maybe 20 sizable holes in the bottom of a 3" x 5" container. You want the water to flow freely out of the bottom. Soeur

Yes, it is once blooming with single blooms. It has beautiful foliage; 7 leaflets which are long, narrow and pointed. I just checked my old rose list - it does not list a breeder but has 'Kiftsgate seedling' under class. That explains the height, I guess. Unfortunately, the growth has been to the open side of the tree which faces my neighbor to the back so I don't get to enjoy the blooms. The tree lost several large limbs in last winter's heavy wet snow and more sun is getting through now which probably explains the emergence of three huge basals this year. I hope they survive the winter.

I am growing it here in NE Texas..does it do well? Oh, sorta'. Would I pay for one? No. If someone gave you a cutting? Sure, give it a try. It took a couple years for it to take off, then, a couple more for it to set a crop (not much of one) and were they tasty- well, there are better ones. See, as mentioned, it is a late one. You know how those last figs of the season are bland and blah? Thats the big issue. The plant is pretty, rather robust and looks nice but just do not expect much in most years. Perhaps you are like me and have many kinds..in my case, it is simply a novelty. I have a lot of space. If your yard is not big, do not bother- much better ones to pick from. I do not think pot growing would be worthwhile as the temps/light level are falling fast late in season when the figs would be ripening- quality would not be great no matter what. I am z8a.
