At first sight I prefer to diagnose microscopical eel worms (nematodes); see Pratylencus scribneri and perhaps Pratylenchus jordanensis - which are responsible for this kind of lesions, provided that other animals can be excluded. My initial recommendation would be to cut all these damaged roots away and treat the bulb with an appropiate nematicidal agent. Phosphorous organic agents with systemic properties should be helpfull. Thanks for the ID, bought one a few years back and now have three colors, the original then one pink and white and one solid red. At that time I didn't know how to start them from seed or how to pollinate but nature did all the work. When I harvested the seeds I thought that there wasn't anything in those little black round pieces of paper so I threw them onto my flower bed just in case and ended up with quite a few new plants which bloomed a few years later. So now I keep trying to have them produce seeds, if for no other reason to find homes for the new seedlings. Paul

Linda, I'm taking a guess, but I have Desire which is an orange with a pinkish tint to the midribs which yours appears to have also. Yours does seem to be a lighter orange than Desire but as yours is growing outside in the ground that might account for the color difference but as I say this is just a guess but, as I look more closely at yours again I'm noticing those two small greenish streaks that my Desire doesn't appear to have so maybe someone else will come up with a better guess.
