Help with small 1901 farmhouse cottage house exterior paint color
Comments (7)What an adorable house! I grew up with those white frame houses with black trim, & to me, they always looked stark & maybe institutional. & this is what I thought when I was too young to know those words! I think with a pure white background, you can use pure clear colors like red, which is a great "country" color for houses, or deep cool pastels, like the gray you have now or maybe a deeper gray. Hunter green is also a traditional color for farmhouse trim, & it would play off the white white beautifully. I'm a fan of Behr paints from Home Depot, but a lot depends on your climate; we have lots of summer & you may have lots of winter or lots of salt spray. This forum's participants have a vast pool of experience a great willingness to share, so I'm sure somebody will give you expert advice on brand & type....See MoreExterior paint colors for a small house
Comments (10)Hi Sylvia, Thanks for your input. That's a good call on the snow cone stand. I definitely don't want that! The shutters are actually a deep navy. They come across a bit brighter in the picture. I was also thinking about maybe a softer white. I am afraid it's going to be too bright if I match the trim, plus, it would show dirt and grime much more. If anyone is knowledgable in paint color and has an idea of a less intense white (maybe with an underlying grey hue?), I am open to any suggestions. I am terrible at picking out stuff. As for asking my mother-in-law, I have learned the hard way on that one. If she had her way, the entire house would be wall to wall flowered wallpaper. I am trying to balance her traditional (said another way, very outdated) tastes with what will ultimately sell. We purchased this home for her to live in while she is able to live on her own, but once she moves out, we plan to quickly sell it....See MoreNeed to paint house and Looking for advice on exterior house color
Comments (8)Keep the shakes! They lend your house character and texture and are fitting for the style. I think it would be bland without them. However, that doesn't necessarily mean you need to keep them stained. Paint is always an option. White is always a classic choice and never goes out of style, whether you keep the shingles stained or not. Greys have been around for some time now and may begin to look dated sooner than you'd like. One idea that I have been loving a LOT is to go darker. Just an idea! Best of luck!...See MoreExterior Paint Color on 30 Year Old Home - Please Help
Comments (11)Thank you for the feedback - MUCH Appreciated. - I'll check out the Garage Door windows. The Garage Door definitely needs painting! Yes FL - We are in SW FL - Near Sarasota. I'm thinking about SW Urbane Bronze for the gutters and possibly the siding. The siding I'm struggling with - SW Evening Shadow or SW Crushed Ice also 2 that seem to be recommended with Alabaster which is the 'safe' color choice for the body. Greek Villa (another thought) seems to have a slight pink undertone. Unfortunately you can't really see the front door, except when is the front porch area. But it's a sweet sitting area with a lot of potential. We also need new screening in that area and will go with the dark bronze to match the pool cage. This small area has siding, stucco and the door to figure out paint colors that will work together There is a slight grey/blue in the roof shingles which is why I thought that could work. But then again I'm spinning and looking for help and appreciate the advice! The landscaping also 30 years old so that's a project coming soon. Along with interior needs. The house is deceiving in size. Inside it opens into an split & open floor plan with cathedral ceilings....See More
