House plans similar to this layout? and architect question
Comments (5)We LOVE our architect. We didn't understand the home building process at all when we started out, so we just interviewed builders based on their floor plans. It wasn't until after we decided on a builder and had worked out a customized house plan of one of their stock plans that we learned about hiring a private architect. Our attorney advised us to find an architect to represent us during the build process. So, we didn't actually pay our architect a full house design since we only have her to advise and inspect. We are paying her an hourly fee instead. However, she did AMAZING things to our floor plan. Just moving things a little bit here and there has made a big difference... at least we think it will. We haven't started framing yet so I guess all floor plan decisions are yet to be tested. After our incredible experience with an architect, I would highly recommend finding someone. She really understood our needs and wishes with our house and found inexpensive ways to get us more. DH found ours by reading reviews on Angie's List....See MoreDoes anybody know anybody....
Comments (24)We have a local pediatrician that does di-chro jewelry. He wears pins and stuff everyday at work and has given lots of it to his nurses and receptionists, who also wear it frequently. He gets lots of questions about the jewelry, and people always want to know where he gets it (most of what he wears is very whimsical). Several years ago he began to have an open house at his own home in early December to sell his jewelry (he and his daughter make it all). They invited their co-workers and friends and just served cookies, crackers, cheese, and punch. They told everyone to bring friends. Every year it has grown and last year they probably had a few hundred people go through their doors. I love his stuff and do lots of gift buying there every year, buying about 20 pieces per year. They now have picture frames, serving utensils, sculptures, and lots of jewelry priced mostly from $10-100, but some a little more. People get there early, waiting outside, to get first pick of everything. Most everyone there purchases at least $100 or more. I get compliments on his jewelry all year long and tell people where it comes from and they ask how they can get invited to this "exclusive" party. I just tell them to call his clinic and they will give them the date and time....See MoreHouse plans online/architect in California
Comments (2)California has very strict architect and engineering regulations. Where local law or ordinance requires drawings and calculations to be prepared by a licensed professional, they must be prepared by or under the direct supervision of a licensed architect or engineer. Thus, your architect will have to start from ground zero, even if you hand her/him Internet plans. Chances are the Internet plans may not conform to all applicable California codes and regulations (Energy conservation, for example), and certainly do not take your property into consideration. So an Internet plan will have to be modified to conform to these. Finally, the plan may not meet all of your family's objectives, and if so, modifications may be needed. So if I understand correctly, you will have to pay the Internet plan factory $4K, and then have all of the other modifications made which are necessary to satisfy your family and to obtain a building permit. I don't know the size and quality of your desired house, but it seems to me you're already at $10K (or more) using your Internet plan. Would it be cheaper and better to simply use an experienced architect? Have you talked to any to get a sense of their scope of service and fees? Good luck on your project....See MoreAnyone know what house this is? Looking for house plans
Comments (9)Thanks guys! I have no imagination when it comes to house plans. I think I need to tour a bunch of homes before we settle on something. Since getting married 11 years ago we have only lived in two homes - a very small, very poorly laid out chalet style mountain home (900 sq ft) and now we are living in a 3 bedroom single wide (980 sq ft) on the 20 acres where we are going to build. All I know is what doesn't work! I like the look of that house and I actually like the shed roof in the back so we can get a full floor upstairs. We are planning on getting an architect to help us with the home but I need someplace to start! And I agree, there are not enough windows on the front....See Morecpartist
