The difference between indoor and outdoor lights is usually a matter of watertightness of the circuits... not a worry indoors, but of high concern outdoors. That just means that as said, outdoor fixtures can come inside, but inside fixtures shouldn't be used outside.

I'm sure this is done as I've seen many of those huge hanging lanterns that decorators are now using with the Belgian style and they must originally have been outdoor fixtures. As long as the wiring is to code I can't see a problem. Keep in mind the function of the light as sconces will be ambient light, not task. I have a dozen wired sconces in this house and I love the light they provide. Downside is that really tall furniture doesn't work with them and they limit wall decor.

Mitchdesj - your urns look wonderful! I have a wrought iron planter on the front porch that I am going to try a similar look - thanks for the idea. Also, kind of an upgrade on the tomato cage and topiary form suggestion, I clipped pics from an old cottage living - actually two different issues where the editor decorated her urns - one for fall, one for Christmas. She used the grapevine trees - the tall (3 ft.) slim ones. They sit in the urns and I am thinking both pics had magnolia leaves around the base of the tree. The Christmas pic she had some more greenery added in around the tree and a few ornaments. The fall one had ivy along with the magnolia leaves and small pumpkins/gourds placed in the urn also. Both look great. I like the topiary forms and we use tomato cages ourselves (upside down) in warmer months for some of our vines. But with nothing growing on them and during the daytime when not lit, they look a bit sparse. On the grapevine trees, you can also use lights. I was actually able to find the trees prelit. tina

Errant - good point about keeping the solar panel free of snow, and I agree I bet there wouldn't be quite enough sun during the day to give the lights a good charge. I was thinking of putting a small Christmas tree in the pergola down in the orchard, which is way far from the nearest outlet. Battery strands don't last all that long in my experience altho I have two outdoor wreaths that run on batteries and which do a decent job of running on a timer for the duration of the Christmas season. tibbrix - I saw that Star Shower advertised on TV. Then soon after I saw workmen at a nearby nursing home setting what I'm sure was three or four of them spaced and aimed along the side of the whole building. I hope if you install them for your tree you can post some pics.
