Do I have a problem: planted trees next to GFI pipes...
Comments (2)Is your first statement about a construction code requiring a certain clearance around an external AC outlet? And what distance is "right next to the outlet"? To me this means less than 3 feet. The GFI (ground-fault interrupt) circuit is just a sub-system of your main AC power supply. The mains and GFI circuits operate on 60 Hertz (cycles per second). There is no radio frequency, microwave frequency or gigahertz telecom frequency involved; some people are suspicious of those. It is not apparent if your piping and wiring is in the ground or up a wall. If in the ground, it would be possible for a tree root to eventually deform the pipe, but apparently the tree trunks are 10 feet away, so this is unlikely. It would be unusual to use an electric pruner on these fruit trees, but if you did and the ground was wet, this is what the GFI is for, to protect you....See MoreCan I plant Modesto Ash or Kurrajong/Bottle Tree over sewer line?
Comments (3)trees do NOT... can NOT.. invade modern chemically welded PVC pipes ... they can very easily do so .. in old fashioned sewer lines.. like at the link if yours were dug out... as you state.. i cant believe they do not modernize the pipe system ... perhaps you should be asking that contractor his opinion??? a very simple primer on tree roots... some say.. a root mass can be 2 or 3 times the size.. of what you see above ... but do NOT confuse yourself into thinking is is in the same shape ... most are pancake flat.. and only a few feet down in the soil [unless there is a leaking fertilizer source down there.. like a sewer pipe] .. see pic below on the root mass of a silver maple .. unless i forget .. lol .. almost all of its roots are there... in the space my ball cap took ... and the large ones going deep ... were headed towards a septic field... go figure on that ... i dont know either of your trees.. but had green and white ash.. both tended toward surface roots ... which was a big problem for me .... i wnated them deeper ... ken Here is a link that might be useful: link...See MorePVC pipe shelf
Comments (11)Lena- just saw your question. It's been a while, but yeah I think they are the jumbo boot trays. Seems like they were running a sale and I ordered them from there. Yeah, I was surprised at how much space you end up needing for some transplants before they go in the ground. If anything I might have added a couple inches between the shelves. But all in all I've been pretty happy with how they worked when I've had to the time to start seeds. Probably won't use them this year, but there's hope for next year :-) Lisa...See Morecan these Camellia trees be saved?
Comments (16)At a previous home in San Diego, I had a 50-year old camellia bush planted up against a concrete block wall and a sidewalk that stopped very near the base. It was on the north side of the wall, with a tall house behind the wall creating deep shade. That thing was huge and dense with leaves and flowers. I trimmed it once to "lace" it -- allow more light into the interior of the plant. It grew doubly fast after that, quickly filling in all the blank spaces. If these were mine, I would bring the height down somewhat and allow them to fill out laterally. They may have been pruned this way because they are in front of windows? A solid shrub is not a good view from indoors. Not the best placement, but that could explain the way they are trimmed....See MoreLogan L Johnson
