Red oak family acorns form later than white oak family acorns?

Well, as above, I want to know if the white oak family acorns are all usually so far ahead of the Red oak family oaks? I have seen my Chestnut oaks and White oak Q. Alba acorns out already, they are still green, but mostly full sized and all. I want to collect a few Q. Velutinas for myself, but, don't see any yet. I will likely need to go about 10 miles from my house to get some Q. V. There are trees near me, but there branches are up far since they are in a wooded area. So I am kinda wanting to know what window of time I need to pounce before the bugs and squirrels get there first.

Considering the white oak acorns put out their radicle in the fall while red oak acorns require stratification before radicle emergence, earlier acorn drop sounds reasonable.

Makes sense Smivies. Any idea when Q. Velutina/ Q. Rubra will be fully formed? There is a tree I know that had them year before last. I guess it would be different for each of our areas. I have a younger Q. velutina, well, 2 of them, but one is ina more crowded spot. I like my more open grown Q.V.'s shape, so want to try from acorn/seed on another area. Well, there is a ID request here on GW tree site here, and Kyle ( he has a red oak family oak needing Id) is likely in the more northern area of the US, and he seemed to have a red oak family oak for us to ID. It was mostly acorn lid/cap, the acorn itself was not developed at all. My field guide showed the leaves and acorn cap as being N. R oak. And so if his was just starting to form, maybe in the second week of Sept I can go looking.

The mix of sowing medium is probably fine, what you've done incorporating the Jiffy mix into the Miracle Grow is lighten up your end product with more peat and vermiculite. All of the nutrients for germination and early growth are already contained in the acorn, you don't need to concern yourself with that right now. Thoroughly wetting the sowing medium initially is good. From there, rather than on a schedule, you'll want to insure it's continuously damp, neither wet nor allowed to dry. It sounds like you may have your acorns a little shallow - "Stratification: Cold stratify for 30 days or until radicle emergence. (this has been done for you by mother nature and you are seeing the radicle/root in the acorns you collected) Germination: Sow seed 1 to 2 inches deep, tamp soil, keep moist, mulch seed bed." (suggestion for sowing outdoors) There is the chance if rain has fallen since the tree incident the chemical was moved through the soil to the area from which you collected the acorns, but don't despair - it seems propagation of these trees has been in effect for quite some time. Not to say you should not be attempting to grow your own, but "Auburn University's School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences has been growing -- and selling -- baby Toomer's Corner oak trees grown from acorns from the same historic trees"...From what I'm reading they have some at different ages now - it will be years before the original trees can be replaced with the now seedlings but there steps are being taken to decontaminate the soil, reinstate them.

Pineresin beat me to it. White oak group only, and then you'll have an ordeal chore that takes longer than canning. And an aside, for trees that size for that price, I'd be very, very careful about them. I'd take two-three out of the pot and look for roots bent at 90Âº, circling roots, presence of fine roots, potbound, all that. this is what i copied & pasted off of one of the forums (don't even remember where now!). i don't post pix every often so i have to go back and refer to it each time. i think photobucket's terms are just a little different now. experiment with the different codes they give you, and you should be bale to do it. if you've done it right, it will show up in your preview window. it sounds hard, but it's really not. How to post pics directly into thread without learning the code. The absolute easiest and fastest way to post pics in a thread where you don't need to figure out the codes (you can learn them later) is to store your photos free at photobucket.com. They post the code under every picture so you would just copy and paste this code into the message. The code to copy starts with The one thing you should also do is change the pic size so it is not too big. Photobucket gives you an edit button above every pic and your final pic should be around 100k or less. I just hit the REDUCE BY 50% button and that usually does it for me. To post by typing the HTML code yourself: ...First you must post your pictures in an online album like snapfish.com, webshots.com, etc. Then you use the code with the only space being between "img" and "src" and no quotation marks. To get the URLofpicture go to your album picture and right click on the full size picture. Left click on properties and copy the ENTIRE URL address from that window. In Gainesville, Florida, the best acorns to eat are probably from the live oak (Quercus virginiana). They are not the largest by far, but some of them are quite delicious. I know of one tree in particular that we eat roasted with no leaching. We dump a few handfulls of acorns into a thing of water and scoop off the floaters. The floaters are often parasitized or bad for some other reason. The sinkers, we tossed into a wok and roasted them over a fire, stirring, until they started to steam. Some of the kernels were very hard, but they were delicious. I've tried some from other trees that were not very good. The swamp chestnut oak has the largest fruit by far, and area supposedly edible raw. Other white oak types you can find around here are white oak (Quercus alba), and b_a_s_t_a_r_d white oak (Quercus austrina). Chapman oak (Q. chapmanii) grows in scrublands, sand live oak (Q. geminata) grows in scrubs, sandhills, scrubby flatwoods, beaches, and other dry areas. Overcup oak Q. lyrata, which grows prinicpally along the Suwanee River around here. Myrtle oak, Q. myrtifolia is another shrubby scrub oak. A friend of mine is growing burr oak for food, but they're still small. The live oak will grow in Atlanta, so that's my recommendation. They are fast growers and have some of the strongest wood of any tree. Their growth form in the open is often wide and spreading, with massive horizontal branches that can dip down to the ground and grow back up, on very old trees. Most of the nursery-grown ones I've seen around here have mostly upward pointing branches, which makes the joints weak, so the tree is susceptible to splitting. The really good one here only produces once every few years, so that's a drawback. I wish someone would have put some work into developing some good varieties for food. I tried cooking some swamp chestnut oak acorns the same way as the live oak, but they were too bitter to eat. I only tried one tree though, and no pre-soaking. Those are pretty slow, but they grow into a magnificent tall tree. In the open, their crowns will be more rounded. The American Chestnut Federation has a 15/16 American Chinese hybrid that has no Chinese characteristics except for blight resistance. That might be a neat one to grow, if they can do that as far south as you are. I have no idea how long they take to fruit. Good luck, and please let me know how your project is working out.

Red oak acorns require 2 yrs to develop, so you might be seeing 1st yr acorns on the red oaks. Sometimes it's hard to tell which ones are 1st or 2nd yr....

That's true, but, the caps are pretty big, so I figured they would be ripe this year, time will tell. thanks beng

Well, I went looking for signs of Q. velutina acorns ripening on some trees. Well, I was staring up into a tree a guy came up to me with sawdust all over him and said "hi". He was part of a crew that had from what he said just chopped down a large chestnut tree in the back of one of the homes by the road I was on. He told me that I was a month too early for the Red oak acorns, but, the squirrels were eating up the other nuts (chestnuts?) like crazy. I did see a Q. Alba with little green acorns on it. So I guess that's my answer. As far as the one pic on someone else's post here wanting an ID of their red oak ( I think a Q. Velutina) I don't know how to explain that one. I guess they had a already half formed Red oak family (Q. Velutina was my guess) acorn. The place I was at when the guy came up to my car, has tons of mature trees. Oaks, Chestnuts obviously, Maples. sycamores, Hickory, many others I am unfamiliar with some Walnuts, I don't know a black Walnut from any other Walnut. Pecans look like Walnuts to me as far as leaves. I would need my Field Guide to tell the difference. I didn't go to the place that I will be going to in mid to late September for a Q. Velutina acorn search. If they had been ripe I could've gotten them where I went today. I may look there first, (where I went today) in mid Sept. If I find any I'll offer some to anyone here who wants any. I have 2 Q. Velutinas. I have one that is close to a Q. Robur, and one that has enough room to grow to a nice wide spreading tree. I love the one that is in the open.

Well, I have been able to collect acorns from Q, Rubra and Q. velutina this week, so I guess the guy with the sawdust on him was a guy that was payed to cut down a Chestnut tree, and may not have known when Red oak family oaks started to drop their acorns. I can send you guys some Q.Rubra acorns if you want, but, let me know soon.
