Water base Poly finish over oil base on concrete

Can I put polyurethane finish over a concrete floor that's been"marbled" with the dissolved mastic left behind from old linoleum tile removal? I am dissolving black mastic with mineral spirits to create the effect. It's basically tar. My son did it in another part of the house and the poly finish is flaking up. Wondering if the poor bond was due to water base on top of what's effectively oil base

Your best bet is to find the number for the finish manufacturer, call them and talk to their technical representative.

You have a can of worms there. You need to consult with a concrete decoration and finishing expert.

Well, first, thanks to all for not abusing me for failing to realize there is a GW Flooring forum. Duh. I have hung out for years on the kitchen and appliance forums and just assumed this would be the place to post. Appreciate all of you helping despite the mistake. At any rate, I did search Bona Traffic and clearly it's the only water-based poly that gets props. Otherwise, oil based is regarded as more durable than other water based polys. Not sure if we'll like the yellowing with the oil, but the floor guy is willing to do some samples so we can see. Would you reject water based if they can't do Bona Traffic (which I gather requires some expertise, and not all vendors will use it) and go with oil based? The location is second floor hallways and master bedroom, not super high traffic areas, but also the stairways, which do get a lot of traffic. Finally, can Bona Traffic be used over existing water based poly? It's time to rescreen our kitchen floors, which were done with generic water based (before I got smart and posted on GW).

We attempted several different samples mixing ebony with Jacobean and it was just too “flat” looking to me. The latest pics are the old wood, which are heart pine. They were planed down from beams out of an old flour factory in Macon, GA and were my favorite part of the house. We added new pine in the bedroom and the color definitely looks different. Will post pics when those dry enough. They were still a little tacky yesterday.

Water-based all the way. It is 2020 and to me there isn't really a need for oil based products anymore. There are plenty of water-based products that are availably and are quality products. Not sure of your location and what stores you have access to but I would imagine there are options available to you. Water-based all the way though.

You are mixing chemicals (mastic adhesive + mineral spirits + polyurethane + concrete moisture) and have had a reaction. I've heard this done...but only by high-end epoxy finishers that deal with plastics and chemicals every day; all day. There is a reason why the epoxy finishers are some of the highest paid flooring professionals around...you need a degree in chemistry to understand epoxy.

And polyurethane for wood is a vastly different product than polyurethane for concrete. There are so many things that could have gone wrong (didn't rinse the floor after the mineral spirits; wrong polyurethane; moisture coming up from the slab; mastic reacting with the polyurethane; etc) that it is hard to figure out what is happening.

Mastic is an aggressive material. It doesn't like anything but vinyl backed stuff. One man's adhesive (mastic) is another man's solvent (polyurethane). Good luck. My guess is you will be using a diamond grinder to get this down to raw concrete so that you can start over.

Use a Diamabrush 25 gr concrete tool. They rent them at homedepot. Waaaaaaaaaay easier.
