I think I gave some flats too much drainage or ventilation slits....it seems like I have to water them almost every day, what can I do? This is an easy fix! I never put more than five or six drainage slits in a flat, but even so that might sometimes be too much. So to fix that I pick up the flat and dry its bottom off with a paper towel, then I take a piece of duct tape or white bandage tape and simply tape over a couple of the drainage holes. The tape does a great job of sealing the slits enough that the excess drainage is slowed down. If you've put too many slits or holes in the cover for air transpiration you could tape some over with clear packing tape, or even easier, just toss out that cover and make new one. How do I make a new cover? Take your flat and slip it into a baggie or ziploc bag. Close the baggie with a twist tie or knot. Take a paring knife and make a few slits in the bottom for drainage and make some slits in the top for air transpiration too. If you use a ziploc bag you can keep the zipper open a bit and make just a few slits in the the top. Trudi

"a corner drain which BTW makes little sense to me" @Patricia Colwell - a corner drain in a sink has 2 advantages. First, it allows an uninterrupted expanse of sink floor to set down things like roasting pans or cookie sheets without covering the drain. Second, it allows more undersink storage since the drain line is off to the side, rather than set in the center of the undersink area. I first got a sink with a corner drain 14 years ago; once you have one, you cannot go back to a center drain. [As an aside, for all of us who are upset at Sophie Wheeler's ousting from Houzz, I am dismayed that Houzz is fine with someone like Patricia Colwell, whose posts frequently run the gamut from disdainful to unhelpful, yet is a "Houzz Pro". @katinparadise That is helpful information. We know that we have a big and expensive project ahead of us. Another thing that we'll run into is needing to bring everything up to code if the cost of the renovation exceeds 50% of the value of the house, which it might. (Most of our value is in the large piece of property on the water, with a lot of privacy even though we're in the city, with beautiful, gigantic live oaks, and not in a flood zone.) The rest of the house (other than the kitchen) looks nice inside, except for my wanting new cabinets and fixtures in the 2 bathrooms, needing new floors and some ceiling work. The one contractor that took at look a couple of years ago said that we should demolish and rebuild. At that point, we also said that we wanted to raise the roof In the living room and extend some outside walls. I'm sure that you're right about the issues other that we might run into, too. That's probably another reason that he suggested a rebuild. We considered doing that, but it would be extremely expensive. We came close to buying a new house this year and were told that the cabinets would cost $50,000. WIth that amount in mind, there is a lot of incentive to make do with what I have and also hopefully have money left to do much needed landscaping/hardscaping. That's why I asked the original question. On the other hand, my husband has finally agreed that I can have the kitchen of my dreams. My hobby is cooking, and we have a large family who usually comes to our house for family meals, which I love to host. (If the price tag of that is unbelievably high, he'll probably change his mind on that.)

@njseventyfour I meant put the two adjacent in the corner - it looks like your chimney is to the right of that first window, correct? Couldn't you put the second window to the left of the remaining window? Might make for a nice spot to sit.
