Coconut Coir? Is it good for tomato planting?

Simon

Hi,
Starting next year I'm going to try planting tomatoes (I want to try Rapunzel and Big Beef Tomatoes). I've been reading online about Coconut Coir (Aka coco coir) and I was wondering if anyone here have tried it for tomato planting.

I know it doesn't have any nutrients for the plant (and its mainly used for keeping the root moist). Do I plant my tomato in a block of coco coir and use fertilizer or should I mix coco coir with some soil (And still use fertilizer)?

I want to plant my tomatoes in a bucket (Since I have a lot of grub worm in my yard). I also want to string my tomatoes (So that it grows on one long main stem).

PS: I noticed that some people who plant tomatoes in buckets use rocks on top of the soil. Are the rocks placed so that when it rains, the soil doesn't plash back up contaminating the leaf?
Any advice would be appreciated :)
