Need help with runners for long, narrow entryway and hallway
We are updating our home to be more modern and so the oriental rugs have to go. I have the paint colors (shades of gray and a complementary accent wallpaper) figured out for this area, but am struggling with figuring out both the size and shape for the runners, as well as finding a suitable style in an appropriate length. Right now we have a 10 foot runner, a 16 foot runner, and a 6 foot circular area rug in the space. The options for 16 foot runners are limited so I am thinking of using matching broadloom carpets cut to runner length for the two hallways.And I am thinking of replacing the 6 foot circular area rug with a 4 by 6 area rug (which won't have to be under the console table) or cut to size broadloom carpet near the front door. I do like the idea of a circular rug but it is a bit forced right now.
What would you recommend doing with the space? Layout, sizes, patterns? Thanks.
Please excuse the messy pictures. We are in the middle of a move and renovating so these boxes are here to stay--for a while anyway.

Comments (2)Could we have a few more pictures? facing the other direction and into little hall, etc.. what does your light look like? Is it the picture or could this space use more light? I think the bench, while nice, is a bit large in scale for the space. Will people be sitting here and taking off shoes? If so remove the pillows and offer a place to put shoes nearby. An entry way without a table is just a passing through space to where you can set your things down. A table with a bench or stools might be more functional for you depending on the type of set up you have. I haven't seen carpet tiles in person but if they offer softer/natural-feeling ones, and not just synthetic like I imagine, I will definitely consider them.
So I basically want to make everything cleaner, more up-to-date and less old world Tuscan charm--I am sick of the very yellow, traditional decor. The floors are beautiful, although if I were putting them in a much darker, less red floor would be first choice. While not ideal, I believe the grays will temper some of that red tone and can work nicely. We are constrained by certain traditional elements and so the look while "more modern" will be transitional and not technically modern. Gong sans rugs is something I thought about but am so used to the comfort of rugs underfoot and not sure the withdrawal would be worth it, plus I really don't mind seeing less of the red floors.
Please keep the responses coming and specifically let me know if you would keep the same sized circular rug or just go for a square rug that fits better in the space.

Beverly this is so very helpful. I am going to find a great area rug for the entrance area and keep an eye out for a coordinating broadloom for potential runners if I find I miss them. Where is thr black and white rug you posted from?
I agree about the chest--I am looking into getting the legs cut down so its not so tall and could be used in the dining room. We currently have a very, very traditional chest in the dining room so if I can repurpose that one there that would make it easier.
I really like the picture you posted of the dark doors, especially the double doors. My hallways are narrow and dark though and I wonder if five sets of doors like this might be too much?
As far as replacement chest and mirrors I would love to get the look in these pictures below. I especially like the look of the wood framed mirror. I haven't come across any that are wide enough yet --I've found a 39inch one but think wider would be better. Alternatively, I am considering the silver braded mirror in last image which is slightly wider at 45inches, but would want a wooden table to offset it so it doesnt read so glam. Any thoughts? Thanks
PRO8 years agolast modified: 8 years agoL,D&D, Please take your time and do your best to view your lovely home with fresh eyes. Hard for all of us with our own homes. I would hesitate cutting the legs on the chest. That height is very hard to find and might be useable elsewhere.
Your entrance provides your first impression, so I like a bit of drama. The rug is from Overstock I think. I'll check. Not even wool.
I appreciate precious rugs, but I'm too fickle about my likes to purchase them. That rug is cut pile. If that rug is available in a runner, a good carpet guy can cut the two edges and bind or sew them together without the appearance of a seam. Even cutting boardloom runners usually involves a seam unless you plan to be terribly wasteful with the balance of the carpet.

Entrance doesn't have to have a chest. Could be a wall mounted table so there is more room for the rug
