Help with Family Room ideas with chair rail & built-in bookcase
Comments (43)Here's the sofa area with the picture lowered and area filled out. Showing the addition of a coffee table in two shapes. And also trying lighter mats on the pics to brighten things up. I love what you have going. It just needs to be completed and filled out some : ) The colors are just gorgeous and make for a wonderful and comforting setting to spend time. You might want to start another thread, as this one is bogged down with a lot of pics. Also, once the images become oversized and the text doesn't wrap anymore, a lot of people won't look anymore as it can't be read easily....See MoreRedoing a bookcase: Dark or Light?
Comments (6)sueb20, here are some pictures of the room - they're from a few years ago because the room is pretty dismantled to get ready for painting. (We're changing the white walls to a light mocha color.) The first is from the entry (at Christmas time), the next from the dining room. The curtains will most likely be replaced, not sure with what yet. Overall, I think we like a light feel, but with a lot of warmth. Does that make sense? We're also pretty casual people. I'm somewhat willing to experiment with these bookcases. They were inexpensive when we got them almost 20 years ago from an oak/office furniture store (think 80's waterbed!). Thanks again!...See MoreHelp! Should I paint my built-ins and mantle or keep the stain?
Comments (34)I just realized I did not come back and update what I decided to do. I so appreciate everyone's commnets and suggestions. I did have them painted white and love the result! it feels like such a tranquil room now. I don't know if it is just an itch to have something different, but now I am trying to decide if I want to have the kitchen cabinets painted white since to rooms are open to each other. I am not concerned about following trends. The cabinets are either maple or birch. As I have polled my friends and family I get differing answers. I am not good at visualizing and have tried the paint visualizers from SW and BJ but it looked like a kindergartener scribbled on the picture with a crayon! I did try homedesign.ai and no matter how many times I ask for white cabinets, it always produced this picture: I actually really like this look, but it also has new countertops and backsplash. I just wasn't ready to do a whole kitchen remodel....See MoreHow would you treat this beautiful but dark built-in of my Tudor?
Comments (55)@arcy_gw, yes, I don’t like the stair spindles either. The plan was to paint them, but the painter did not feel I would be happy with the result because they are heavily distressed and where to start and end was problematic. Or maybe he was burned out. We will likely replace the stair railings down the line. @jjam, the hardwood floors are actually white oak, not red oak, as originally suspected. We used the Bona system: Bona NaturalSeal x 1 coat, followed by Bona Traffic HD Commercial Extra Matte x 3 coats (2 would have sufficed - the third was precipitated by a goof that couldn’t be fixed with spot coating). Love them!!...See MoreOlychick
