As you can maybe tell, I am lookin up at it with the camera pointed basically towards the sky. This rose, when I first got it, was planted in a pot like most of the others I get for observation purposes. It grew quite mannerly, to about 4 to 5 feet. I didn't think much of it at the time. It appeared fairly normal. It had beautiful, medium sized, bright red flowers that my camera does not capture properly. After I put it in the ground and it got established, it went nuts. It turned into a skyscraper and could be used as a climber. It has topped out around 14 to 15 ft tall. It has lots of bright red flowers, but it will get very tall, and like I said, might double as a climber. The flowers themselves are not large unless it is in cooler fall weather. When it is cool, the flowers will get larger and can look dazzling. This is one nice variety, but be prepared to give it room....See MoreA Pleasant Surprise
Comments (13)Bustopher, this is Grande Amore first year in my garden, so it's hard to compare it to those you mention. Leibeszauber does very well in the PNW as you probably already know. Opening Night is a favourite red for cutting because of the number of blooms it produces for me. Olympiad is a great rose, unfortunately it didn't like me or I didn't get a very good plant. I haven't had Ace of Hearts for years, but at one time it was popular here too. Grande Amore seems to be quite weather proof as we have had a lot of continuous rainy days which tends to spoil so many blooms. I'm not happy with the rips in the petals, but there are some nice big fat buds that will open soon and I'm hoping they will be better. Since it is quite new, I thought you all might like to see it tho. Thanks for looking....See MoreKordes Reds, etc.
Comments (19)I love Dark Desire. I got it as a tiny band from Chamblees this year. It has grown quite nicely and has bloomed pretty good. It currently does not get much sun. I normally put my roses in pots and let them get an established root system before I put them in the ground since i have to worry about nematodes. However, in the shade it has not had any blackspot or mildew. However, I am in zone 10b in South Florida. I grew up in Missouri and I know your zone is totally different....See MoreVeterans honor, grand amore, Chrysler imperial, or firefighter?
Comments (8)Veteran's Honor is likely the one that's the most "true" red. After years of browsing, planting and photographing reds, I find that they almost universally fall into two camps: ones that lean, if ever so slightly, to pink or purple, and ones that feel like they lean orange. I have learned that I really do not care for a hint of orange in my reds, so I have come to appreciate the pink/purple hues that can get mixed in to a red (I used to dislike "bluing"). Out of your list, I would choose Firefighter for overall merit. In person I find it to be extremely close to true red, maybe 95% of the way there? Unlike Veteran's Honor, it does not lean orange, it leans cool when it drifts from pure red. Veteran's Honor I also find to be scentless, and Firefighter has excellent scent. I used to not care about scent in roses, either, but now a rose with undetectable fragrance feels dead to me. If you liked Chrysler, I think you'd like Firefighter. Chrysler has pink days, and runs blue in the sun. Firefighter is like a Chrysler Imperial that runs closer to true red, and I think has improved bloom form....See Morekentucky_rose zone 6
