You could buy a cheap beveled mirror and frame it with moulding or have it framed. Then it can be any frame or color you want.

If the mirror is light enough, you may even be able to hang it with command adhesive picture hanging strips (the velcro-ish type). I think my 20x24" beveled mirror has been hanging with those for years and hasn't budged. It is in a dry area - don't know if that matters.

This would give you the opportunity to try different things very inexpensively. I might start with 1x3 pine boards if you want to accent the square motif, though that would be very clunky, but it would make a statement. Or you could start with a fancier moulding. Or a wide baseboard. Stop by a frame shop and look at their wall of samples. Walk through the moulding aisle at home depot.

BTW this won't work if the mirror is on a medicine cabinet. I assume that isn't happening now. :-(

Another option is to pick something cheap and use it until you find something you love. I have a beautiful mirror in my downstairs bathroom but the frame is made of hard foam. It looks like stained mahogany to me, but I know it's cheap and probably wouldn't hold up under heavy use. But it does look pretty. Probably from home depot.

For the lighting, you could pick a fixture you like and if it has shades you dislike, sometimes you can swap them out. I got my fixture online but the shades cast a yellow tint which I hated in my white/blue bath. I replaced them with white blown glass shades I found at Lowes.

Unfortunately the medicine cabinet is not happening now. We had decided to do t but then a vent pipe also turned out to be in the way. I have decided that hubby can just charge his razor and toothbrush in the other bathroom. Honestly he's super messy so that will probably make for a happier situation anyway.

One thing slowing me down is all the stories (reviews) of mirror desilvering. This mirror will be mounted to tile, so it needs to be a good mirror that will hold up and not fail soon.

I would still try to find something that would be easy to replace, so that you don't have to affect your tile if you need to replace the mirror.

Here is a DIY tutorial on framing a mirror. It looks like the mirror has clips instead of adhesive. That might make it easier to change if you can get a stock size. (Ask your contractor about the reusing the holes with screws.) If you can't get stock size mirrors, I think you can have mirror cut at Lowes. I think the frame covers up the clips.

You could keep the frame separate from the mirror to reuse, I think.

I used to have an oval mirror. When I switched to a rectangular mirror it was so much more useful, because I could view the top half of my body.

But first I would pick an amazing light fixture, then go simple on the mirror. It's hard to get any light fixture to go with any mirror. If you DIY the mirror, you can save money and apply that to the light fixture you picked out originally, which looked great to me. Remember the light fixture frames the top of the mirror somewhat, and the faucet and soap dispenser frame the bottom somewhat, and you can put art over the toilet.

I thought I just saw it on build.com, but they are not so good at shipping lighting - I assume it comes directly from the manufacturer. You could put it up yourself if the box is standard. Maybe you could use your old light in the meantime, or get something super cheap if you need to have something temporarily. I think you can download most instructions. You can call build.com (or the merchant you choose) and also try calling the manufacturer to see if you can get quick ship or installation info.

With that fixture I might do a large vertical rectangular mirror, beveled if possible (or not), frame with a 1-2" wide, 1/2" deep rectangular molding spray painted satin espresso brown. If that conflicts with other decor, you could pick white or another color for the frame. The dark brown is rich looking IMO. I tried painting my doorbell cover satin nickel and hated it, probably because it was too big, and the paint is sparkly. Although you could try a metal satin nickel frame if you want to, but that would be harder to build. Another option is to try to mimic the frosted glass in the fixture - I have no idea how to do that.

It would be a masculine look, but that sounds like what you are going for. I like your vanity and light fixture. You can always add fresh flowers (I have wall vases) or other feminine wall art or accessories.

And if you do the DIY frame, you could always swap it out for a bigger and/or more curvy moulding.

I don't know. I'm not going for a masculine look really but also not really an overly feminine one, since it will be my H's bath too. Just classic/modern/neutral/not marked in terms of gender. ;)

My contractor will have to move the junction box, so I wil just have to tell him where to put it. I am definitely capable of putting up light fixtures beyond that as long as there isn't anything too weird going on.

As roarah mentioned above you could check with a local glass company and have them make one to your necessary specs. That's what we did and then had them mount it on plywood and attach to the wall over the bottom row of tile to make it look like it was floating:

The whole wall is going to be white subway tile (4x8 with light grey grout).

Did you have the glass people mount it to plywood, or the contractor? I like this idea a lot.

You should look at the capiz mirrors at Pottery Barn. There is a rectangular one and a round one. They may not be practical but the pics look beautiful. I'm going to check them out in person and see if I can find a spot for one in my house.

purrus-Our GC made the "boxes" (`1" deep, maybe?) and then the glass people mounted the mirrors on the boxes. Obviously the mirrors are a little bigger than the boxes.

The mirrors are 18x40. The glass people also put 2 clips on the bottom of the mirrors to help hold them in place since the "box" thingie ended about 6" above the bottom of the mirror.

We did have the wiring figured out before the mirrors were mounted, but the mirrors were on of the last things done.

I had my wiring for outlets, sconces, over head fan and ceiling fixtures all done before mirror, fixtures, vanity and cabinetry were added. I have a small oval tilting mirror that is only 24 wide over my vanity it was dirt cheap from lowes and they had rectangles too. Under 100 dollars. Your contractor should be able to drill with a new and properly sized drill bit to tile without issue and if it cracks the tile can be easily replaces. I know cause glass door guys broke a tile on their last hinge using a dull unchanged bit and my tiler fixed it is less than an hour. I can not attest to its quality but I love my cheap I mirrors function. This is similar to mine might be too short at 24 I think.
