What do you do for winter protection of delicate plants?

I went a little crazy this spring and bought quite a few lovely plants that are supposedly hardy in my area but that don't quite come through in practice all the time. I'm a bit to the west of Madison.

Included on this list are the acid loving ones like Japanese maples, azaleas, high bush blueberries, and a number of saplings of hardy species (sugar maple, etc) but that are still quite young.

i also have deer problem in the winter. And rabbits. The arborvitae, I hear, are delicious.

do you burlap your plants? Use deer netting? Anti desiccants? I'm expecting the first nip in the air in a couple of weeks and want to be prepared, especially for those awful deer.

i have no problem using burlap and am totally prepared to live through the hell of Jan-Feb while staring at it. Nothing could make those months any darn worse. ;) especially for my azaleas and maples, I would move mountains to get them through.
