For anyone in the Toronto, Canada area that is interested, Miele is having a 2 day sale March 3rd and 4th. Here is the link.

Great sleuthing! I'm also in Toronto, and have found people selling extra Turface on Kijiji from time to time. I wish the Orchiata was cheaper. The west coast distributor sells 40L bags for $33.05. I imagine it is quite expensive to ship it out here. Not sure where they get their douglas fir bark from; it also looks pretty suitable if a bulk source could be had. I tried a bag of that All-Treat Canada Red pine bark mulch from Home Hardware recently. Not a fan. It's shredded, with long, thin particles. Also lots of sapwood.

I live in the Kitchener-Waterloo area and have a hard time with climbing roses too. Sally Holmes is awesome for me. Starts out with a peachy bud, but fades to white. Haven't really noticed much of a fragrance though, Here she is this morning: New Dawn, which I believe is supposed to be zone 4, always dies right back to the snow line. Last fall I defoliated all her leaves, tied the canes together, wrapped it in burlap, lay it on the patio, and buried the entire thing under mulch. It seems to be the only way to get climbing roses to really climb for me. But my goodness, she repaid me kindly. I’ve taken to planting co-ordinating clematis to get the height I want.
