Monstera Deliciosa varieties / cultivars

Hi everyone,

I've been looking online for a definitive list of Monstera Deliciosa cultivars, but cannot find one (unless I'm simply not looking in the right places). In that case, I thought, maybe here would be an appropriate place to put one together?

So far, I'm aware of:

The original, large, all-green kind, obviously.

Dwarf / smaller version 'Borsigiana' - apparently faster growing with more vine-like growth habit.

White / 'albovariagata' versions of the above. The ones I've seen (including mine) have the marbled, 'paint splash' look, and the variegation is bright white.

Yellow variegated - presumably both full-size and Borsigiana exist. I've seen one supplier advertising a very brightly yellow variegated Borsigiana, with the same or similar patterns of variegation to the white version. Would post link but not sure whether that's OK on here.

Then there's another cultivar with a different, 'splotchy' variegetion, which in pictures appears to be the full-size plant. The variegation is creamy / beige rather than white. I've seen this online referred to by all sorts of names including Cheesecake, Pepperface, Thai Constellation and Marmorata - all look similar if not the same.

Is anyone able to shed any light on the above, or add any others?

I should also point out that the only variegated deliciosa I've seen in the UK is the white variegated one, and even that is fairly unusual (but does crop up on ebay relatively often). I've never seen any of the others here.

It depends on what you mean by "sand mixture." How fine the pieces are, and where they came from (i.e., how clean they are), may matter a lot. On watering, I find my plants do better when I let them get pretty dry between waterings: if I can feel moisture when I stick a finger in, or if the pot still feels heavy, I wait. Of course, mine are also fairly big plants, in fairly big (8" or 10") pots, but that winds up being about once every three weeks or so. Your results will vary depending on light (brighter is faster), temperature (warmer is faster), pot size (smaller is faster), pot composition (clay is faster), and soil mix (more grit - sand, gravel, etc. - is faster). Too much water will cause lower leaves to turn bright yellow and drop; too little will make the plant look kind of limp, and leaves will dry, yellow, or get brown edges.

I won't claim to be an expert, but my understanding is that M. pertusa/pertusum (sometimes seen also as Philo. pertusa) is an invalid synonym of M. deliciosa. M. borsighiana is a separate species with a growth habit and appearance much like M. deliciosa, but smaller, less cold-tolerant, and with inedible fruit. The more knowledgable sellers are listing their aureo- and albovariegated plants as M. borsighiana.

There's near 50 species of Monstera, the most commonly cultivared one being M. deliciosa. And that's the one with the fruit that's eaten. The "Swiss Cheese Plant" name comes from the holes in the leaves. Also called Fruit Salad Plant because the fruit tastes like fruit salad. The fruit starts to ripen at one end and slowly proceeds to the other end. So you can't eat it at once but have to eat it progressively and keep putting it back in the fridge. The taste is like a tropical fruit salad, very nice but difficult to deal with because of the way it ripens. That said, your photo doesn't look like M. deliciosa. Looks more like Philodendron bipinnatifidum (sometimes still sold under the obsolete name P. selloum). I've never heard of them being edible. Being a Philodendron they're more likely to be toxic. If you do get some M. deliciosa fruit give it a try. The fruit is elongated and covered in green scale-like plates (small plates of course). When the flesh underneath ripens the scales become loose and fall off. Don't eat the flesh under scales that aren't loose.

I'm still new to maintaining my houseplants...so don't take my advice for definitive truth. Yours looks similar to what mine does and here is what I've concluded is the likely issue: Improper soil drainage. Many users have noted that even their local nurseries tend to use soil mixtures that are 1 part peat, 1 part perlite or some variety of that. The soil really ought to be (per Al's suggestion) 5 parts pine bark fines, 1 part spagnum peat moss, 1-2 parts perlite with garden lime. The pine bark fines help aerate the soil and allow the roots to breathe. A good article on that can be read here. Maybe it's an issue with the roots as well? Or a mixture of the roots being overcrowded & drowned in water? When the leaves get curled on a monstera, it could be a sign of low humidity. Maybe try misting the leaves more or using a humidifier?
