The only way for the track not to show is to build a cornice type box. This mounting hardware is probably mounted on top of door. The track has to extend past the door so it has somewhere for it to slide to .

That is a *really* neat idea; I've never seen that! Sorry I'm no help, lol. PS - I just googled "DIY barn door hardware" and lots of stuff came up. Admittedly, I just skimmed, and it all seemed like full-sized stuff, but I'm sure your builder could toss around a few ideas. Do y'all know any welders?

They take up so much room on walls. People somehow think they are saving space, but they are costing themselves space. No art, or light switches, or anything else, can go where they stack. But you’re still required to have outlets there. So if you have to plug anything in, it gets super awkward, and even dangerous, as you risk pinching the cords. If you choose to have moldings, the doors project from the walls even further, and admit light and sound even more than standard. If you choose to not have moldings, then that’s an expensive whole house upgrade. Because choosing molding every where but behind the doors is cheesy looking. The only positive is the no door swing impacting either room. That’s it. The heavy duty soft close is the only way to go if you do choose them.
