I need a greenhouse for my turtle pond
Comments (8)I asked about frost lines and a backhoe because if you are planning a permanent home for your turtle inside a greenhouse, it occured to me that sinking the tank into the ground to below the frost line would make good sense for both heat retention and the comfort of the turtle, as you would then be able to allow it free access to water or ground. It might be more pleasing to you too, as you could line the tank rim with decorative logs to serve as both ramps and basking spots, rocks, plants, etc. If the tank happens to be a stock tank with a bottom drain, you could retain the ability to use it by making a permanent connection to it with a PVC pipe, then install a ballcock shutoff on that line with a long extension to an above ground handle. But to do it obviously requires drain lines and with a small backhoe, in short order- you would have the hole for the tank, the trenches for the drains and if it's your only option to discharge the water other than a sewer or septic, either a long gray water line or dry well. BTW: What species of turtle do you have? A friend of mine here in very cold in winter No. Il keeps turtles in an in-ground pond inside of a heated GH. The herons got all of his fancy Goldfish, so he erected a GH over the 1000 gal. stock tank he had sunk into the ground and while planning new fish, succumbed instead to the charm of turtles....See MorePond inside greenhouse
Comments (7)Hi Have a 3x6 x3 foot deep pool in the shadehouse as well as a 150 gallon aquarium and a marsh garden,. These are all attached to the outside 5x10 water lily pool. Heated with aquarium heates mainly for the fish but added a waterfall last March hopefully to provide some heat . I think I'm going to remove the 3x6 for several reason.. It takes up way too much floor space,is too shaded to grow water plants well and of course it's almost impossible to view into it. The aquarium has worked very well, not only provides warm water but allows growing submerged plants and very easy to view the interior. I use it for the resevoir for the waterfall which is7x10 feet. It drains into the marsh area which acts as a channel to return to the lily pool. The main problem there has been unbelieveable growth !! lol Way too much shade for the submerged plants. Another is gardening with a ladder lol. very inconvenient, I made the waterfall from expanding foam painted with acrylic paint. Got a huge "rock" wall with very little weight and low price. This also functions as a semi-hydroponic "seep" wall for epiphytes mostly orchids. All things considered , I'm rather pleased with it but there have been some problems. Have no idea how it works as a climate moderator as it's been too warm for a test. I wouldn't make a pool that deep ,way too hard to clean, somehow everything that falls goes in the drink lol. Above ground is far more useful. gary...See Morepond to greenhouse project (adenium related)
Comments (103)This one is so large and powerful. I've been watching it since it was a wave and early on was concerned it might enter the Gulf. The tracks are all over the place now and I just hope it goes out to sea for everyones sake. I am really concerned about this one though. If you would like I have links to some really great forecast sites....See MoreZone 3 four season greenhouse - early project planning and brainstorm
Comments (34)I want to caution you against having any wet floor (like a greenhouse floor) attached to your home above grade. I'm a long-time pro remodeler specializing in water damage from outdoor tile & stone floors. The majority of contractors you talk to will say 'sure no problem, it's just a matter of cost', but trust me that these are too complicated and too dangerous to risk. Putting it above your garage will NOT save you. Water is amazingly insidious in somehow finding the most wicked lateral path towards the inside frame of your main house. There is always some missed or inappropriately applied flashing or sealing that works for a couple years until the warranty is up, then you find out one whole side of your house needs to be replaced. We did one where an exterior tile deck leaked at the bottom corners of the French doors into the main house and traveled laterally way into the main structure. Cost the owner 200K and the original builder was nowhere to be found. Yes there are companies that make their living doing it everyday. It's still a very, very risky idea, and the ones who tell you 'no problem' are never there to foot the bill....See MoreJohn Lasseter (Fl)
