The raised beds are 3ft X 3ft X 10in high with a mix of mostly peat moss with 2 1/2 bags (50lbs each) of Natures Way Resources Blue Berry Mix and little bit of pine bark mulch. Its also topped with 3in or so of pine bark mulch. I also added sulfer and cottonseed meal when mixing it all together. 2 of the potted plants have 1/3 peat moss, 1/3 soil conditioner (composted pine material), 1/3 pine bark. And one potted plant has all the same plus some perlite I had laying around that needed to be used. They all seem to enjoy there home for now. I have some burnt tips on the new growth on all the plants at one time or another. Not to sure whats its from either. Was thinking maybe lack of water or water quailty? Im using municiple city water acidified with sulfuric acid to ph5. I have noticed that some of the new tip growht that gets rubbed other branches from the wind will get this burnt look to it. Attached is a picture that was caused from rubbing against another branch untill grew past it. Some other ones though Im not to sure about.

Yes. You'll see them every where in Western NY State, where I live, along with swallow wort, garlic mustard, common buckthorn, and other invasive alien species. Search and destroy is the best approach to these. FataMorgana

I think chickens know what not to eat but nightshade is very toxic to people. When this weed pops up in my yard, I send it and all it's berries right to the garbage. Min

Jane, yours is a wild cherry, Prunus serotina, not buckthorn. It doesn't have the prominent leaf veins on the leaf underside that buckthorn has, and the edges of the leaf are finely toothed unlike buckthorn's smooth leaf edge. The cherries have their own stem with nothing but cherries on them rather than the buckthorn's many small stems for berries off of the main woody stem/branches. If you open one up you will recognize small cherry pits, and there is a bitter cherry taste if you are brave (I think buckthorn has 2 or 3 seeds.) One of the keys is the small lines in the bark (technically lenticels) on the cherries, where the lenticels on the buckthorn are dots. The other key factor for me is when you scratch cherry twig bark it smells like almonds, while the buckthorn has its own distinctive odor that isn't easily described, but definitely isn't almond. My memory is also that the buckthorn fruits have a clear yellowish flesh under the dark skin, while cherry fruits have the dark stain in the flesh in the same way commercial cherries do. Prunus serotina is native, and while it can be messy (the fruit stains as you would expect cherry to do) and it does seed around some, it doesn't IME outcompete and choke out other plants as buckthorn can do.
