Which brand sliding door keeps rain water out the best?
Comments (5)Your question is akin to asking what breed of cat is not susceptible to fleas. The building construction and foundation can make any door, esp sliders prone to leak. Before investing in a new door of any brand, have your home evaluated by an expert(s). That might be done by prospective installer during estimate process. I have been forced to cover more than a few door entries where foundation was the root problem. Another common problem occurs when patio is at or near same level as floor inside house. A patio that is dead level or sloping towards house. Don't overlook flashing, the water often enters from above or off to the side of where you first see it. One final piece of advice. Caulk look's bad and only works temporarily, regardless how much is slopped on....See MoreWhich holds a good paint on a hot door best, wood, fiberglas or steel?
Comments (20)Livewire, there’s a distinct difference between snarky and pointed. My note was intended to end the business relationship and was appropriate given the informal nature of our correspondence. My response to Jeff was to exhibit agreement with the price of the door while objecting to the price of the transom. Secondly, you’ve assumed the installer is represented in my post which he is not. Much like the business of buying a door, the business of installing the door had me circumvent the retailer and their installers. In that process alone I saved approximately $400-$600 not including some additional rot repairs that don’t exit. So although this leg work can certainly be over whelming, if it saves me money and Im happy with the result, I don’t mind if I’m taken as what the English would call “snarky”. However, there’s an English virtue “mind the pence and the pounds will take care of themselves”, I’m hoping this one suites me precisely. Jeff didn’t get his feelings hurt, Jeff quoted me $250 in an email then sent a quote for $938. Jeff tried to increase his margin. Jeff can do that. Chris can go in another direction. Chris did that. If you don’t know, that’s snarky...See MoreLift and Slide Doors - which are best

Comments (13)Look into Carriage House Door. Their doors are a good step above in quality and you can get them in any style imaginable, custom made. They're priced fair ($5600 for custom steel overlay) and can get them in 2-3 months. Only caveat is that they come to your house non painted, only primed so you can paint them any color. They price the door lower to take his into account. For about $700 in my area I can get it pro painted. The windows can be insulated too. Additionally their insulation is injection so it goes into every nook & cranny. Other makers just sandwich the insulation leaving many air pockets for cold air to seep into. Other big famous makers I mention later lie about their R value insulation. They measure the thickest part to give the R reading but not average the thinner insulated parts which is usually most of the door. If you want just a nice steel door (limited styles) quickly (1-2 weeks) that has the stencils in the window in different variations, look into Northwest Garage. Anything custom from them or anyone (CHI, Amarr, etc) else will run you 5-6 months. Beware for any overlay models from CHI, Clopay and other brands. They delaminate after 2-3 years. Read the 1*reviews on their website. My garage installer told me to just get a non fancy steel door so I wouldn't have disastrous headaches. I went with Carriage steel overlay because their doors are hand made, custom designed, and built to the nines and I have evidence of these doors never delaminating after decades. These doors you see on mansions because they are so amazing looking and well built. Find them prettiest door in the Houzz photo library and them be 100% able to make it for you. FWIW, I did TONS of research and interviews with top installers in my area....See Moremillworkman
