Would you be mad if a neighbor opened your bank account statement?

I received a piece of mail which i thought was mine since it was from my bank (which was strange since i have online banking and dont receive paper statements).

When i opened it, it showed hundreds of thousands of dollars and multiple CD's. Which i dont have anywhere near that kind of money! lol

I was shocked at first then i looked at the name and it was my neighbors. The mailman mis-delivered it! I want to take it to the neighbors but im embarrassed that i opened it and fear they will be upset. I have never talked to these people a day in my life even to say hi. They are actually a few houses down.

Would you be mad?

What should i do?

Just throw the mail out and make sure to check the name next time?

Tape it up, write a note that says "opened in error", put it out for the postman to redeliver.

Mona and Deborah nailed it. You still haven't told your husband about her behavior with boys, have you? I don't know what the "sensitivity" is about not telling him, but your daughter's behavior trumps that. I cannot stress enough that he MUST know now. I don't care if he screams at the top of his lungs, hits his fist through a wall or throws something, he'll calm down and think rationally once he gets over the shock. lol If she were my daughter, she'd be grounded for the summer. I too had raging hormones at 12, and they were totally out of control. Thankfully I didn't have sex but I sure did like to kiss boys! All it took was for my dad finding me and a boy together at 12 years old kissing him. It scared the pee out of me! lol. Oh, he was mad alright but I changed right then and there. Shannon, you're trying too hard to make your daughter happy right now. Nix all suggestive clothing. It's time she dressed and behave like a young LADY. Tell her she will be greatly respected behaving like a lady instead of an "easy" girl. I think it would be fine if GIRLfriends came over to visit, chaperoned, and if she goes to a GIRLfriends house chaperoned with parents you approve of. I wouldn't allow her to walk anywhere. Or go shopping alone either. Someone needs to have the "Come to Jesus" talk with her ASAP or it will be way too late.

And now for the rest of the story (please tell me Im not the only person on this board old enough to remember Paul Harvey) Well, your responses got my friend thinking. So, he called his agent this afternoon. He apologized for losing his temper. He told her he understood that she had to parse the marketing budget carefully. After all, the property could sell in a week or a year. So, he offered to have his marketing folk get extra copies of the brochure printed at his expense and that he would later deduct the amount from her commission at cost. He said that, after a very long pause, she agreed that it might be wiser to print more high-quality brochures for the OHs and that she would be very pleased to take care of that herself. He asked me to pass along his thankssaid he may become our newest lurker.

Nope, I do not open my wife's mail unless instructed to do so, Once in awhile, we do open each other car isurance notices if the wrong name is on top of the address list. We both own cars and have the ownerships registered in both our names as HIS or HERS (Not "and"). This way, in case something happens to either of us, the other spouse can take ownership without a fuss and sell the car if need be without probating through the court. On occassion, the insurance company gets the wrong name at the top of the address. Its no big deal - We merely hand over the piece as soon as the mistake is discovered. I tell her that if she opens one of my bills, its ok to pay it - hasn't happened yet, her paying it, that is.

These days I'd hope no one would put anyone's bank statement in the trash. You need a shredder.

A while back I worked in a company that was putting the pay stubs of employees in envelopes in their mail slots, alphabetically ordered. I once opened by accident the one next to mine, who belonged to the head of marketing, and I was nowhere near that pay range. I was absolutely mortified, but she took it in stride with "This happens". Not one of my proudest moments, but there were no consequences whatsoever.

I would take sushi's suggestion -- discarding it would make you feel worse, like you compounded your mistake. Return it and get on with your life. Just think of how much mail goes astray every year...

Things have really changed over the years. When I was starting out in the Navy's Submarine Service, prior to Credit Cards, we had to pay either cash or by check to by groceries and most anything else.

In order to pay by check at the base stores, the check needed to include:

a) Our Name and Rank/Rate

b) Our Service Number

c) Our Military Command Name

d) Our Home Address

So we always ordered all of the info pre-printed on the checks.

Oh, did I mention our Service Number was our Social Security Number?

So anytime I cashed a check, all of that info was there for the recipient as well as my checking account number.

As I said, things have really changed.

I'd be wondering what to do to too, tlbean, if I'd done it.

I agree with sushipup and ChristopherH. That is what I would want someone to do if it was my statement, and I would want them to forget what they had read. It can be done. My Dad never listened to gossip of any kind (poor guy) but if he did ever hear anything, he'd deliberately forget it.

I took it to their house and no one answered the door after i rang about 3 times in 3 minutes. I just stuck it in their mail box.

Crimney, scotch tape the envelope sealed. circle address. Write "opened in error". Put in your outgoing mail. I've seen it done here and I've done it.

I now wish there was a Mail Delivery Forum with a FAQ.
