Best Ferilizer for Violette de Bordeaux?

Hi. I purchased my first fig tree which is a violette de bordeaux. I live in Massachusetts and will keep it potted.

I'm looking for fertilizer tips. What is the best fertilizer to use and at what frequency?

Since no one has responded so far, let me try to help bearing in mind my pot cultured figs are all newbies for me.

The general consensus is that figs do not require high nitrogen amounts in ground or in pots. Pot cultured figs need supplemental fertilization. Whether liquid feedings are given or timed released pellets are used keep the nitrogen down.

Many sources recommend using a fertilizer formulated for citrus trees. Also, supplemental applications of lime are indicated since figs do not like acidic soil.

Miracle Gro makes a slow release 3 month pellet for citrus I intend to try for my pot culture figs. Look I to this option for yourself.

I also have a Violette de Bordeaux of which I have great expectations.

Kinda confused. I just responded and nothing happened. Anyway. Alkaline is best for figs, so a little lime. MG is cool every 6 months. Hard for me to respond. I grow nothing in pots. It's all in ground. Perfect fig climate. Yours will go dormant for a while. But the variety is a cool weather fig, so it should be great. Here, it sucks! It wilts in the heat. Breba crop is great, but anything else is small and horrible.

Hi Rafed, You hit the nail on the head there. I do believe that the Ronde is worth every penny and hopefully some day I can afford it. The day that I do get it will make all the wait well worth it! I myself collect all kinds of cool tropical fruits. I personally paid $125 for a very rare and awesome tasting mango variety that I got in Hawaii. I want everyone hear to know that I am NOT trying to be cheap or trying to get something for nothing. I know that eventually I will get my hands on the Ronde. I do know someone who may be able to sell me some cuttings when she cuts hers back but she did say that she could only knock off a few dollars so we will have to see. Andrew

Leon,I would never get upset with your opinion.I respect your opinion!Herman once mentioned that taste and productivity,and adaptation is more important than name and I agree with him.However when you've been growing a tree for more than ten years and think you have the best and then find out that maybe you have an imposter it's aggrevating!These figs are tasty but tasty compared to what? Maybe the real VDB will blow my socks off and then the taste of these figs will just be fair.You mentioned in the post Titled Tastiest Figs that your VDB (PA)hands down was the best.What does PA mean and where did you purchase your VDB? Bass its a good 5 days away still as its still hard our weather is now warmer all of sudden going from low low 70 to hitting 80 each day but loseing sunlight as days get shorter, the embryo's seem to have a slight tinge of violette on head when the come out and as they get slightly bigger they get more and more violette thruout which im not used to a fig doing although all mine are darl types that stay green until they get ready. Thanks Anna. Reason i asked is always believed that there are different strains depending on where it came from or misnamed ? As i recall back then around 2007/2008 our Vdb was purchased as Vdb from Edible Landscaping but recall seeing Negronne with dominant leaves of 3 lobes on other sites i guess it depended on where plant was purchased from, then there was Petite Negra do not recall leaf shape and Vdb with the 5 lobes or as some same 3 lobes with 2 thumbs. Anyways thanks for showing yours here is the one i had and was seeking one that had the 5 lobe shaped leaves even as a baby plant they would show this trait . The seller said his was originally purchased from Hirts. Called edible Landscaping yesterday and asked about VdB was told they may have some this winter. Here was ours from back then i looked at pictures as i rooted several of this plant from cuttings and they match at least in shape of leaf luckily to the new plant bought Noticed on my disk some pictures from 2008 are blank as this was when i first started to take pictures of our fig plants just never thought of doing so back then. click to enlarge any picture. Below dated 8.6.2010 i recall taking this below picture in the evening showing the leaves notice the coloration of the figs and about 5 weeks away from getting ripe it seemed they did this on the plant come out light bronze then as they grew turned a greenish light bronze then dark purple eventually. Early in spring on this forum someone asked questions about fertilizing . Dieseler/ Martin added his way of fertilizing . Which was ONCE A WEEK DILUTED 1/2 STRONG MIRACLE GROW, and so I tried it and it very very successful. THANKS MARTIN. My fig trees could not give me more fig. After every leave there is a fig or two. Now I would love to make pictures and show you the results but I don't know how to do that.
