Pruning Oakleaf hydrangea Alice

This was planted in summer of 2014. I have not seen a bloom
on it thus far. It was planted along with another oakleaf, “Ruby Slippers”.

In the winter of 2014-15, both were killed almost to the
ground. I could tell that rabbits or other pests had chewed the bark. “Ruby
Slippers” did not make it, and I replaced it. Last winter I caged them with
mesh and filled the circle with leaves. Even so, the second “Ruby Slippers”
again did not make it. It actually sprouted slightly after being uncovered,
then died (there was NOT a frost after). Given that it HAD shown signs of life,
I left it alone, but presumed dead is actually dead now. 2 strikes, you’re out! I will not replace it.

Alice was shaped
like a tilted Y, and had about 18” of live stem on one side and 9”on another,
both obviously alive when uncovered.

Now, in August, Alice
has shot up to five feet on one of the 2 branches. But, there is no branching
at all, all I have are 2 sticks with some widely spaced leaves on them. The
other stick is about 2 feet tall.

Given that most of this is 2016 growth, I don’t know if or
when I can expect it to bloom.

The pruning site I have read seems to be aimed at a warmer
climate, as it described pruning oakleafs “after bloom” in June or July. So I
have no clue what to do with this one. I
don’t know when they are supposed to bloom in Zone 5 Chicago.

Unless I put my desire for blooms on hold and just go ahead
and prune it anyway, hoping for branching. Thanks for your help.
