Is this a wasp nest? How can I remove it?

I have this nest on the siding of my home near the roof. Is it a wasp nest? Can they get inside or damage the house? I read that they die in winter I'm not sure if I should wait. It's close to a bedroom window but I am not sure if I can remove it myself.

Baldfaced Hornet. I wouldn't advise that anyone try to remove a nest themself; the risk for an attack is great unless you know exactly what you're doing.

On the other hand, it might not pose a risk at all, depending on if the nest is located away from activity or not.

Do some Googling to read about these insects so that you can make an informed and safe decision.

Appears to be a 2nd-story location; very tricky for off-the-shelf wasp sprays. Some will wander in an open window or door. They do not damage the house, although it will take some scraping to clean the eave after the nest is removed, wintertime is best.

You can buy cans of Raid that will spray from 25 - 30 ft away. I took out a hornet's nest last year with that stuff. It's hard to say in your case how big the nest is and how many are in hiding. I saw a few yellow jackets flying around one of my shutters last week and thought there might be a small nest behind the shutter. I started spraying with the same wasp and hornet killer and to my shock about three dozen yellow jackets came pouring out of the shutter. So you never know how many you might be up against. However, these insect sprays make short work of them. You might leave this job for a professional if you are allergic to wasp stings.

I don't know hornets. Around here we have paper wasps. When I want to get rid of a nest, I wait till dark and using a flashlight I spray the nest with hornet and wasp spray . It shoots a stream 20 feet, so you don't get too close. At night almost all the wasps go into the nest. Only one or two guards are sitting or flying about the nest. I try to spray nest, guards and all wetting thoroughly. The result: all dead. Maybe one or two flying near the nest wondering what happened. Those go away--maybe die.

That is true in a one-on-one encounter out in the open. With a nest so close to a house, there is an increased chance that a random wasp or hornet will be crawling around on a faucet, doorknob, sprinkler, or on the floor where a barehanded or barefooted person could make accidental contact.
