Comments (8)I grew them for the first time last summer and was wowed by them and so was everyone who saw them. I planted them on a wire arbor and there were just three vines, one on each leg. They covered the top and legs and the leaves are as lovely as the flowers. Just remember they are poisonous, so plant them where you are not tempted little children because they get purple pods on them that resemble green beans. I grew them in awful soil and it was quite dry, seldom requiring water and they flourished. Don't hesitate. They will not let you down. They bloom heavily in late summer and clear til frost here. They are a bit slow out the gate in early summer. It is best to soak the seeds overnight to aid in germination. Tho they will also do fine without it just takes longer is all. Good luck!...See MoreHyacinth Bean Vine
Comments (12)Hi Patty, I have noticed that it often is very slow to flower, often not flowering until mid-summer. In my yard it tends to start blooming around the same time as the moonflower vines. Extreme heat can shut down the blooming but when the weather cools a little, the plants will flower. Otherwise, be sure it isn't in a location where it is getting too much nitrogen, like for example if it is near a lawn that is regularly fertilized. With bean plants, nitrogen can give you all foliage and no flowers. Shade possibly could impede flowering, but it would take a lot of shade because I grow beans (including hyacinth bean) in part shade all the time with great results. One other possible issue would be that flowering can be impeded by exposure to lighting at night. Hyacinth bean vines are short day/long night plants and can refuse to flower if they get too much light at night from street lights, security lights near driveways, and other outdoor lighting. If yours has too much light from some outdoor lighting, you might try planting in a different location that stays darker at night. Dawn...See MoreSpacing of Moonflower Hyacinth Bean Vines
Comments (11)This is a follow up. The moonflower vines that I wrote about back in June have grown like crazy! They topped the five foot deck, grew all over the end of the deck, I was gone for three weeks and they covered my deck swing to the point that I had to prune them back. They are lush, thick, growing like crazy and not a single bud or blossom in sight. When will they bloom???? The two other vines in other locations, grew a bit and have been blooming all summer. Does anyone have any ideas as to why I am getting all vine and no blooms? Can I fix it? Thanks, Murphy...See Morebogturtle
