Plumeria trees in Virginia Beach, Va.
Comments (31)Hi Jeanne!! I do try and pot up the smaller trees each year and i will go up to the larger size being 12-15 max. My largest tree is a handful to move into my great room and I can't go any larger. Once it grows to large for that container, I will root prune and place it back into the same container. Most of my new trees go into a one gallon ( when I root cuttings) and I will move those up the following year to three and then five gallon. The number of trees I have are greater then the normal collector. Lol. Did I just say that? Nooooo.. I'm a " normal" collector.. ;-). I just have over a hundred or so to move inside each year and it takes a few days to prepare them for the " March Of The Plumeria". But I love it.. My trees are starting to have yellow leaves ( bottom.. Older leaves). And like K mentioned, that is normal. It's their way of shedding and getting ready due to the limited light now and the cooler evenings. They know when it's getting time to relax.. Mother Nature knows best.. im also seeing some orange rust, so don't be alarmed if you see this. It's getting to be that time of the season. Thank you K for your kind comment. I do appreciate your vote of confidence.. I'm still learning, but I also love to share what I do know. Please let me know if you need any help. I'd be more than happy to help you in any way... Have a great night !! Laura...See MoreMore blooms In Virginia Beach... Taj Mahal..
Comments (37)Hi Everyone!!! I'm laughing so hard... No one told me a few pics were upside down.. I posted these pics from my iPad and they looked fine.. Then when I looked at the thread on my iPhone they were upside down.. Sheesh!! Robert confirmed it to on an email, thanks Robert... You do have my back!!! ;-) Thanks !!! ( still laughing.. Couldn't get to the edit thread fast enough...) Hi Mindy!! The greenhouse will hold around thirty or so.. I will keep the best ones growing under lights this winter and the big boys will be stripped as well as most of the little ones, then brought inside for the winter... It is a job!!! Hi Chuy !! Thanks!! I love Hawaiian Fire too!! Still is making my head spin!! Love this beauty!!! Lani as well.. She is one that makes me stare at her all day!!! I do hope it warms up for you guys!!! ;-) Hi Nauticalcoast.. Thank you!! I have worked hard on my yard and it is finally looking the way I planned many years ago!! Mahalo!!! Thank you Mark!! I love the look of the tropics... So I decided to make my yard look like I was in a place where I could go and relax and not leave the house. It has taken over 18 years to get the palms as is.. But , it was worth it!!! Thanks Jen!! Welcome back!! Hope you had a wonderful time!!! We need pics... Lol. Love to see some? Thank you for the comment on HF . She is something and I will say that I love her beauty.. I wish I had more land too!! Lol.. DH would have me committed tho. LMAO! He is close... Hehehehe,,, The Kohola seems to be different to me than the Scott Pratt. I have also seen it listed as a aka.. But my Scott Pratt blooms were more burgundy than this Kohola. This one has more purple hues to it. It was hard for the camera to pic up the true color, but it seems to be different to me. I did see on Diana's list that it was a aka for SP. I'm not sure.. It looks totally different to me.. But, my Scott Pratt bloomed last year.. This year I'm not so sure. The leaf and stems on the SP have the red veining to them where as the Kohola is more green all around.. ???? Who knows... I just know that I love the color of Kohola.. It is like no other!!! Aloha Rox!!! I hear you about land.. Your house is beautiful tho!!! OMG.. The views you have as well as the decking on the water.. MMmmmm, looks wonderful to me!! I bet you could slip a HF right in there!!! ;-). Would love it next to the railing... Lol!! Sorry.. Trying not to enable.. But, it is fun!!! Thank you !!! Hi Christopher!!! Thank you for the nice comments.. You asked about my palms.. I added the pic above for you to see. They are cold hardy in my area, but not when I first planted them. The first three years, I protected them during the winter. I would wrap the hearts with heat tape ( pluming tape for pipes) and then tuck them in with Burlap. Only the hearts of the trees. I was the first in my area to experiment with them in my landscaping over 20 years ago and now you see palms all around VB. great business to be in!!! The oceanfront even got in the groove several years ago. They look good , but the wind causes lots of issues and the heads look tattered and dry. But others have them in their yards and they are doing great. I have Windmills, Sabal Palmettos and Butias aka Pindo Palms.. All cold hardy to my zone. Thanks for asking!!! Also for the nice comments too!!! Hi Sharon!! The yard does smell wonderful.. Especially at night when the blooms have the strongest fragrance. I also love the Tuberose.. It really makes the yard smell wonderful.. Thank you!!! HI Mike!!! I know you are going to have a yard full of trees around your pool!!! I can't wait to se pics... You have been quiet here.. Must be working on that yard?? I can't wait to see.... mahalo!!! Hi Barb!! Lol.. That is why i love seeing all of yours!!! You have a huge collection at your house. Simply beautiful!!!! I always love to see pics of your trees and the blooms... It is such a wonderful feeling to see new Inflos.. Or lush growth on the trees.. We are true plumiholics!! Just like all the rest of us!!! ;-) hi Cynthia!!! I agree with you.. It makes me so happy to come home from work and walk onto the deck to see what is happening with my babies while I have been gone. They always surprise me with something.. It might even be a new moth or a Praying Mantis.. You just never know. A few nights ago at dusk, I saw a Bald Eagle fly over my house. It was low and it had a twig in its Talons... I was over joyed seeing this beauty!!! Nature and Plumeria.. Can't beat it!!! ;-) Take care everyone!!! Comments (16)Thank you Barb!!!! Yours is quite lovely, Vincenzo!! I love it!!! Lol, Jason!!! Hacksaw.. Is that my name now? OMG. You are to funny!! You always make me think of my down grafting since I did my " hack saw" grafting.. Lol. They are all doing well... I will admit that all of the trees that I kept under lights all winter have not produced inflos. The trees pushing inflo now are my mature trees. The small one gallon, newly potted trees get the lights and heat mats all winter. I wish they would produce because they are some beauties.. One day when they get some age, they will step up!! This Desert Sunrise and others that are blooming are mature trees that were in a semi dormant stage all winter!! Hope you and your " little bird" are doing well. Please tell " N" we miss her.. Hi Hollis!!! You are so lucky to have two of these beauties!! I can't wait to see yours bloom!! Hi Emily!! I thought of you this after own as I took this picture .. This is for you!!! ;-) Dave.. Lol. You are making me chuckle because I thought the same.. But not on an old skinny man.. Lol. Have a great night!!! Laura...See MoreJ L Dane Blooming In Virginia Beach, Virginia
Comments (12)From Diana's notes: This might answer your questions on this J L Dane ( Jim Little Dane) Dane JL not Thai Dane, very similar to Taj Majal. Yellow with red pointed layered edges sometimes 6 to 7 petals. Named after JL's grandson. The flowers are extraordinary - a deep gold in the center that goes through the petals, green veining when it first opens and changes to a vibrant red. Each petal curls inward to form a pointed tip. Upright growth habit with beautiful, full heads and a light sweet papaya fragrance. Must have heat to bloom correctly. Named after JL's grandson. Very fast growing. Needs heat to bring out colors. Heat lover. 2.5-3.5”. Tips of petals fold inwards. Golden yellow with dark gold center. Tips are dark pink almost red and the edges and back are the same color. Needs heat. Performs best in cooler weather. Sweet scent. Excellent keeping quality. Medium to fast grower and an easy rooter. 2 1/2 ", not hard to grow. Big bouquet and very fragrant. Poor branching, needs to grow 4’. Leggy. Sets seed. ************************************************************************************************************* Price varies on the variety.. I can't remember the exact amount that I paid. It wasn't under lets say 50 dollars and if I can recall..it was on a bidding session with Matt's EBay sight. I think you could find one rooted for under 100. I don't like to really discuss prices because some are very expensive to some and others will pay a certain price in order to acquire " a certain variety" to add to their collection. I know you must be loving this one, but it all depends if you want to invest in certain cultivars.. i hope this helps!!! Laura...See MoreLoveplants2 8b Virginia Beach, Virginia
