Unfortunately your descriptions don't tell anyone what species your plants are. The "Hyacinth Blue" ginger is most likely Dichorisandra thrysifolia, which is commonly called "Blue Ginger", but its actually not a ginger at all, its in the Wandering Jew family. "Scarlett Red" ginger could possibly be hedychium greenii..."REgal White" could possibly be hedychium coronarium...but its a toss up without the botanical names, or even more descriptve common names, like "Butterfly" ginger or "Hidden lily" ginger, etc

tamkatie, I've grown Hedychium indoors and out. They get pretty big if you want it has a houseplant, and they tend to grow better outside than in, unless you have a bright spot, greenhouse or conservatory for the winter months. If you have a smaller rhizome, you can grow it as a houseplant fairly successfully, but probably will never flower as such as they need space to grow to flowering size and they seem to like the outdoors better. From my garden, I've been digging them up in the fall and cramming them into pots, after which they go into the 3 season room and then the basement when winter hits. I just keep them on life support through the winter months and then get planted back in the garden in spring/summer. They really take off once they are planted in real soil again and will usually set blossom again by fall/late fall.

Mike, unless you want to collect seeds, cut the suckers to a few inches above the base. My flowers profusely and historically when I have kept the stalks w/spent flowers, they were never as attractive or healthy. Unlike other gingers where you need to cut the spent bloom stalk, this one will continue to survive, but I have found the stand fills out quicker and produces more new stalks faster if those are removed. Wanna trade heliconia and some others. Let me know.

I have seen these 'tubers" on this plant and a few others. I leave them on the plants when I transplant. The plant seemed to slow down growth when they are removed. Nothing grew for us from them when they were removed and planted, but I read somewhere that they will make new plants. -Gwenn
