Propagate Evolvulus Blue My Mind

I have one of these plants in a pot and would like to grow more from it. I've read that you can divide it but even though I've had it for almost one year, it doesn't look divisible. Has anyone propagated it?

I googled this plant as I had never heard of it. However, it very much resembles Convolvulus so I wonder if there has been a name change.

This is what I read:

This
is an evergreen herbaceous perennial in the warmest parts of our
region. Where it is not reliably perennial, it serves well as a summer
annual that produces large numbers of true blue flowers throughout the
growing season. The small flowers resemble those of its relative, the
morning glory. The plant grows to about a foot tall and spreads a few
feet wide with stems that root as they grow along the ground. It grows
and flowers best in a moist, well-drained site in full sun. It does not
tolerate prolonged drought or continuously wet soil. It is reported to
be moderately salt tolerant. Most references list it as a reliable
perennial in zone 9 and south.

This species is commonly available in the nursery trade. Plants
are propagated easily by cuttings. They may be propagated by seeds,
too. Recently, a plant named 'Blue My Mind' showed up in the nursery
trade. It is described as a hybrid but resembles a compact version of E. glomeratus with darker blue flowers.

I suggest that you plant it in the garden in a position that suits it well (and where you would like to have it grow) and then wait. There will come a time when you can dig up pieces of it that have rooted.

Alternatively, if you want to grow it from cuttings, choose the tips of the new growth in very early Spring. If it's Convolvulus in disguise, it will readily root.

Convolvulus can take very rough treatment when it comes to trimming them. In other words, sometimes I get fed up with mine and give them a severe haircut, not really caring if they survive or not. They always survive. And they look a lot nicer. (Mind you, the other day I got a bit over-zealous and pulled one up by the roots. I doubt he'll put up with that. But I have other plans for that area.)

The description of stems taking root where they touch the ground says this plant ground-layers itself. You can speed the process by purposely bending branches to the ground and laying a rock or brick over the spot where they make contact with the ground. Works best if it's a spot of bare soil, not mulched or grassy. Can also bend stems to the soil surface of another pot and pin/brick it down there, being careful not to crimp the stem where it crosses the rim of the pot.

the trouble with spending time researching plants is that you end up tempted to buy more of them. :) My yard started out like this in Dec in early January it looked like this: now it looks like this: It's hard to see, but my roses, which mostly were bareroot sticks or tiny bands have gotten so so much bigger and some are blooming. The whooly thyme inbetween the pavers has gotten at least 3 times their original size... and I can't kill them... they're so tolerant. :) my grass on the otherhand... I'm slowly figuring out how much water it needs compared to the lavender which I seem to be overwatering... so... if you get too many different need plants at once, it might take a lot just to figure out how to water and keep them from dying huh? I look forward to each single bloom on a plant and the growth, even though it's slow... and I just enjoy weeding and checking on the plants every day or so. It's also fun to read about all the plants and think ahead to what I might plant next year. and like others, I'm seeding some alyssum and simple daisies and such.

There are some things you need to know about Elephant Ears. First of all, there are two basic kinds. One is a great big bulb. These will have leaves that face the sky. The other kind grows on roots. These face the side. If the ones you have face the side, they are very likely invasive. Do a search on Elephant ears and you can read how incredibly difficult these can be to get rid of in your part of the country. I have read that some of the side facers are clump formers, specifically Black Magic. I sure would like to have confirmation of this from someone who grows it. But that's for another discussion. Back to your questions. If you have leaves that are laying on the ground, you can trace them back to their base and cut them off. The plant should regenerate fresh leaves. Any that are withered should be removed too. Cannas (the kinds that grow on roots, not bulbs) like nitrogen and water. They will actually grow in standing water (which is why you see them growing so well in ditches). Even if you damaged your original plant, keep it watered and you should be fine in a few weeks. As far as Miracle Grow is concerned, I don't recommend it ever for a newly planted or newly divided plant. It has very strong salts in it that can be harsh on tender roots. That being said, it's unlikely you hurt Elephant Ears. In the future, try using it at half the strength the bottle calls for, or better yet, use Fish Emulsion which is an organic fertilizer that never fails to do plants a world of good. Back to the invasiveness issue. If you determine that your EEs are the invasive kinds, I would highly recommend that you dig them out before winter comes, if not sooner. Not to worry, you won't get them all out. Any roots that break and remain in the ground will come back next spring. At that point, you may want to transplant a few of them into large pots, so you can enjoy these beautiful plants without having to declare all out war. Again, do a search for several threads on them.

'Blue my mind' is a vegitatively propagated patented hybrid, so don't believe seeds will be available. Pretty sure I saw this in 4" pots at Home Depots in our area last year and other places handling the Proven Winners line. Have seen generic blue daze Evolvulus plants in multi-packs at Lowes. Seeds would be okay for these, but don't know if retail sources are any better.

An interesting read, Mark. I know I'm resurrecting an old thread, but I do have some clarifying Qs ... (See Rosie, you're not the only one who needs to ask "dumb Qs" heh j/k) When you say " I guess they don't list isopropanol (= isopropyl alcohol) but I think concentrations of 50% or more probably work. That's a guess. " , do you mean straight 50% isopropyl as purchased in a store or taking some proof of iso. and diluting it with water making a 50/50 solution? If the latter, what proof do you think might be sufficient? Are the paper towels initially dry with the leaves between them before you add the bleach solution? So your rinse entails pouring the sterilized water into the bag and swishing it around to try and remove the bleach? Hmm, wouldn't have expected that to be effective -- especially if the towels had been dry. Having absorbed the bleach solution into the fibers, would have thought it would be difficult to displace it with the rinses. I am quite frankly amazed the cuttings don't rot under such water logged conditions in the ziplock. Also surprised by the fact they can get enough light through the towels to fuel growth.

For what it's worth, Evolvulus 'USEVO1201' (a.k.a. Blue My Mind dwarf morning glory) is a patented plant and cannot be legally vegetatively propagated, without permission from the patent holder, for ANY reason (including personal use).

EDIT - I just realize that RRoss is in Australia, so the above info very well may not apply. It would here in the US.
