Anyone grow Boule De Neige? Paul Neyron? Maggie?

I've wanted this rose for a while but I'm not sure how well it repeats bloom and whether or not its disease resistance is good enough for my hot South Florida climate. Others on my list are Paul Neyron, Clementina Carbonieri, Maggie and Old Town Novato. But I'm really looking for a nice white rose with old fashioned bloom form (repeat flowering an absolute must). My Claire Austin turned out to be duckling yellow and I really want a good white. Any info on any of these roses would be greatly appreciated.

Kronprinzessin Viktoria. It performs well in the heat, but I do not know how it tolerates humidity.

Sorry, it was a little breezy when capturing this image and it is the only one I have. It is always white, not cream, or yellow... and has a lovely bloom with a decent repeat. The buds are also pretty.

That's a beauty!!!! Is Mlle de Sombreuil in commerce? She's a beautiful white vigorous disease resistant fragrant tea here! Boule de Neige is not real happy in this heat and humidity. It's a pleasant surprise when I get blooms (second season). Maggie is ok here but sometimes I wonder if I got a dud clone compared to others' praise of her. Paul Neyron has enormous blooms but they aren't very frequent and the bush is not too healthy. Frau Karl Druschki is gorgeous here and healthy but not too floriferous and no fragrance.

Based on my experience growing roses here in Nashville, you just can't do any better than teas, China's and noisettes in the South. There are others hit and miss (and I have a lot of them) but for the most part Austins, Bourbons and HPs aren't ideal here. All of the above implies no spray no chemical garden as that is what I have.

You're welcome! It's not odd that cooler zones will report more fragrance from many than warmer areas. Those in the cooler places are probably smelling them when the oils and alcohols are most volatile and smell the most. We in the warmer areas often miss out because they evaporate faster as the heat increases. Also, as aridity increases, the scents burn out faster. The various components of each rose's fragrance evaporate at different rates, so one may smell very Damask at first, quickly morphing into orris or citrus, finishing a completely different scent before losing any detectable trace for the day. Geo, even hybrid musks are not created equal. I grow Felicia in full blazing sun and she has been blooming since early April. My Buff Beauty is in a shadier spot but has cleaner foliage than Felicia that does get spotty. Another fantastic Hybrid musk is Prosperity, it is clean and keeps blooming even in this terrible drought in a semi-shady position - in summer it gets more sun than in spring and fall. I wish I could say the same of its neighbor, Baron Giraud de l'Ain; I think that the baron would do better even in less sun in my hot and humid climate. There was a HP expert on this forum, Pete of Belgium; he suggested afternoon shade for HPs and very rich diet. Does anyone know why he stopped posting? I miss him when I dream about HPs doing better here.

True_blue, 'John Davis' will bloom again on new wood, though the second "flush" generally isn't very significant. In order to climb, this rose NEEDS deeply dug fertile soil and feeding, otherwise you'll just end up with a shrub, but an attractive one at that. 'JD' can take zone 3 cold, but the biggest challenge is dealing with winter desiccation drying up the stems. Alberta (central Alberta included) will at times experience amazingly BALMY winter temps and the reflected heat from buildings will only further intensify and desiccate this rose. So, I water deeply prior to freeze up and attempt to lean 'JD' away from the house ... it's a challenge to get almost any rose to climb in our cold prairie climate. 'Olds Collage Rose' looks especially nice, thanks for posting vstapes :)

I love these references, Virginia! Please keep them coming. When I read them, I think of those roses which are lost, and at first I, too, think it's a shame. But then I think of people 100 years from now looking through old garden catalogs and books from today describing new roses -- even over on the general rose forum, there's often much excitement about a new rose coming out, only to be followed by poor reviews from growers trying them. I wonder how many new (at the time) roses pushed by the likes of Wayside and Jackson & Perkins just 20 years ago are still in favor -- were they surpassed by others similar in color but better growers? Perhaps styles changed, and formerly popular colors are not held in high favor anymore. Think of the Floribunda 'Fashion' -- when it came out, that particular shade was all the rage, even influencing home decor, but not so much anymore. If the plant producing those blooms was awful, is nostalgia enough to merit keeping it around? Individually, yes, many were beautiful, but when gathered together with similar roses, people can't help but decide some are better than others. They all sound amazing in catalog descriptions when first introduced. I'm not talking about tossing out entire classes, but for example, with all the fragrant pink HPs out there, why retain the ones that grew poorly or were otherwise surpassed by others of the same class? Considering so many were raised from (presumably) self-set hips, the differences between them were often slight. How many similar "...seedling of La Reine' roses should be preserved? I'd say "the ones that do well". 100 years from now, others may ask the same question about Tom Carruth's line of purple roses, like 'Ebb Tide'. Every rose introduced lately represents countless others tossed aside before even being introduced. Every hip removed and discarded holds seeds never germinated, roses that will never be. I purchase two Maggie this year, planted her in May and she hasn't grown much, likely because she uses all her energy to bloom!! This rose is the happiest little plant. She's had some new growth, but unlike most roses that spend the first year establishing its roots and growing Maggie is happier just sitting tight and blooming! I love her, such pretty blooms too! I know I should cut the buds off and encourage her to grow, but I have no will power. I live in an area that gets alot of blackspot, she arrived with a bit just from shipping, which concerned me, but I have not needed to spray her since I sprayed her in May when she arrived.

Not sure what your weather is like, but we have had a hot summer, high nineties most days, very humid, and she has tolerated it very well.

My Maggie is still not much more than one thin cane and a few leaves at ground level so she may be a better rose where it's more humid. Mme. de Sombreuil has done quite well and does seem to bloom a lot.

I don't have any really good pictures of Boule de Neige, but it has the prettiest little "snowball" blooms--very white--which contrast nicely with the buds that are touched with red in places. Mine was slow to settle in--no blooms at all its first year. This is its second year--had a nice spring bloom (why didnt' I take more pics?) but hasn't bloomed since then. However, right now it is putting out a lot of buds, so I'm anticipating a good second bloom (and hoping it blooms in the fall also). Whether all this is typical or not, I don't know--haven't had it long enough.

Boule de Neige

The following pic is not my own--found it in google images. I just love it and hope my Boule de Neige will be this bloomiferous soon.

Oh yes, one thing--the blooms are a bit small--but perfect. Round "snowball" shaped.

So far it has had no BS problems.
