Are white quartz countertops a fad?
Comments (42)" People prefer natural materials, which quartz is." This statement reflects the marketing by the quartz suppliers but is demonstrably false. "Natural", by definition, means "existing in or caused by nature; not made or caused by humankind." Quartz tops are a petrochemical based resin that is brewed up in big vats, mixed with quartz chips, artificial inclusions like glass, and coloring agents. (Incomplete mixing at this stage of the process is the source of the "resin pools" which are often found in the more variable quartz colors.) This mix is then extruded out into a large shallow container and then baked at several hundred degrees. The resulting sheet of baked resin is then polished with equipment very similar to a stone polishing line. Hardly "existing in or caused by nature; not made or caused by humankind". That said, the quartz surface products do make a relatively durable countertop surface that can be engineered to provide the appearance desired by the product designers. IMHO the primary long term threat to the desirability of quartz surface is the increasing presence in the market of low price quartz products (Korea & China). As cheap copycat products permeate the market the current panache associated with quartz tops will dissipate and it will become simply another low cost alternative. This is much the same as what has already happened to some extent with granite. The increasing use of exotic stones like labrodite and quartzite has helped to maintain at least some of the upscale perception natural stone has always enjoyed....See MoreWhere to find Mother of Pearl Quartz countertop
Comments (25)I just want to thank you all for everything. My hubby is the cook in our family. This design is with him in mind. Since he liked the sample I showed him, I didnt want to let him down or at least find a comparable option. This project was becoming so overwhelming. Not be able to find such a key piece of my design plan, my family and friends were about to abandon me because this is all I talked about. Everyone's answers were its no big deal its just the counter top. That was making me even more nervous and sad. I really appreciate everything. Again, thank you all....See MoreI think I finally found white granite!
Comments (32)Yay! A lot of Bay Area people here. Firsthouse, I saw your slab at DaVinci. Just beautiful! I, too, have been to so many slab places in the Bay Area (same ones as you, I'm sure, plus all the San Leandro places) and was very frustrated that I couldn't find anything. Your advice was very good... "keep looking! Don't give up and ask if there is new stuff coming in, even at slabyards you have already visited." And I would add...if they have new stuff coming in, ask if there's a wait list. I found what I wanted (at DaVinci, actually), but all the slabs were sold and the next shipment was in a month. I was on my way to IRG (Brisbane) last week to buy my 2nd choice granite (very distant 2nd choice) and I got a call from a slab place (All Natural Stone) in San Jose that said they had a new shipment in and I was off the wait list for my 1st choice (Typhoon Bordeaux). They put my name on 2 slabs. Immediate U turn on 101 to go see it! I NEVER thought the wait list thing would work out. What a relief (demo's in a couple of weeks)! So congratulations, firsthouse mp, and hang in there everyone else! Your countertop is out there! Julie (Woodside, CA)...See MorePhotos of white/ light-colored counters please:)
Comments (37)I was very confused as well between all he different white options but what I learned is that Quartz is a man made product and honestly it looks to me like Corian. Quartzite is a natural made real stone and very different because its apparently a kind of more durable marble and its so beautiful it looks like sparkly crushed glass. Yes quartz is sparkly but again quartz is not in any way quartzite but people use the two names interchangeably when they are as different as night and day. Quartz its not nearly as desirable or expensive or rare or unique.Quartz is ore durable and has no maintenance at all so thats good but for me i wouldn't put something inn that looks like fake stone. I ended up getting Carerra marble because I wanted something very classic however I am being careful by having it sealed regularly and not putting things down without a coaster and always trying to protect it. Its worth it to me. Also look at Calcutta marble in my opinion its so gorgeous but my husband was afraid id get tired of it like I'm tired of my ugly green granite I put in 8 years ago and now am changing in my kitchen, Don't get quartz get quartzite or marble it will make your counters beautiful and chic and trendy and perfect. Good Luck!!!!!...See MoreKristi
