Specific Question only female/winged carpenter ants in house
Comments (6)The ants are probably already in your structure. And finding multiple winged forms indoors indicates the colony is at least 3 to 4 years old. So you need to begin looking for clues. The good news is that , although you need to determine if the ants are in your structure, you have plenty of time to figure that out and, if needed, hire a competent pest control company. Look for wet wood, as from a roof leak or leaky plumbing or soil/mulch/plants against the siding. If you're *lucky,* you can get by if you replace the damaged wood and also fix the leak. Unfortunately, by the time most folks find the winged reproductives, the colony is large and the damage more extensive than not. Investigate both the crawl space (if you have one) and the attic, if accessible. Look for piles of sawdust which may or may not contain fragments of dead insects. If none of the above are found, continue to do periodic inspections. And once the weather warms, you can look for a two-way trail outdoors. The time to do that here in the northwest is from April/May through October, at night between the hours of 10 pm and 2 am. Look first at the foundation of the house, also any overhead utilities that enter the house. When you find the trail, follow it to the main nest. If that nest is on your property, you need to have both the house and main nest treated. Oh yes, more good news. For the past several years, pest control companies have ant baits specifically for our Northwest carpenter ants. (Understand, though, that the baits you can buy for nuisance ants won't work.) Just how a site is treated depends upon the individual circumstances. So you'll need to discuss your options with several companies, then choose the one you feel comfortable with....See MoreProactive treatment of carpenter ants
Comments (3)Roach Proof (boric acid) mixed with honey will kill carpenter ants. Ants will take this mixture back to the nest and in time will kill the queen. Maybe you could figure out a way to put Roach Proof/honey in a small container and fasten to trees out of reach of children to reduce the ant population. Protect from rain. Since the mixture worked in a weeks time I did not get around to putting the mixture on trees. I did put jar lids of the mixture in the upstairs and downstairs attic. Ants will enter a home through the weep holes of the brick. Ants enter the home looking for water....See MoreCarpenter Ants
Comments (7)I had quartlerly treatments (not monthly) for carpenter ants. The treatment was to drill tiny holes on the inside of perimeter walls, every 16 inches. Then they would puff a powder that they said was just boric acid in each hole every three months. This was done after we had all the rotten windows and surrounding wood replaced. I beleive they also dusted the attic very well in the first treatment. We removed the rotting apple tree a few years earlier. I also only use cypress mulch (not pine bark) in the garden because insects don't like it. I felt that my treatment was a huge rip-off. I did not want the basement sprayed, the outside of the house sprayed, or the interior living areas sprayed. The pest control companies have one price around here - no matter how little you want done. I just wanted the boric acid treatment for the ants. I would have been happy to have them do just the first treatment that did involve the attic and basement, but they would not allow that. I had to pay $75 every three months to have them come back and puff powder into the wall holes they had drilled. If you are like me and don't want your dogs, cats, or kids exposed to poisons, do the boric acid treatment yourself. You can still buy it in drug stores. Don't fall for the "everything we use is organic" ruse. OF COURSE it is! Living things are organic and other organic compounds (poisonous organic compounds) kill them. Arsenic is organic. So was agent orange. So is botulism, so is dioxin, so is DDT!...See MoreTermite Treatment - Do it myself
Comments (21)First of all if you can get the house treated for 800.00 and 150.00 a year after with a warranty grab it and run... I live in southewest La and paid 1500.00 and still had termites. I could go to court but it cost so much here and courts are so backed up... My mom also had termites and I paid 1700.00 for her and got the money back from them because I could still see termites eating a doorjam. That was with a lot of calls and fussing and stress. Then I called another company with a young private guy and he explained everything. I watched and read lots and lots. When you are five foot three and blond older guys just do not listen. I payed him 1200.00 and they are gone at my moms. I will tell you what I plan on doing with my house and my daughters but not online. Chemical that are legal depend on where you live and its not hard to get certified. I know you live in Texas, but let me tell you termites were on your site before your home was built and in the south we all have them. They will find a way in unless you treat the perimeter of every building you have. Some woods they will not eat and sometimes you have 2 different kinds of termites. You will need a Powerful hammer drill. You can rent them. Your wife can call me for other directions. Excuse me I mean email me. happy.now@suddenlink.net....See MoreJohn L.
