A dumb faucet question - Chrome faucet with stainless sink?
Comments (9)Here's another vote for chrome. I have it as a finish on my faucet at our lakehouse where we have soapstone countertops and sink. I think it looks timeless and don't have any problem with upkeep. I have had "chrome look" fixtures in my bathrooms which were hard plastic with a silver finish and they were a nightmare to keep nice looking. They were always spotty and the finish rubbed off if you tried to clean any grime off them. If it's real chrome you shouldn't have problems. I have a stainless sink in my kitchen here at home and went with a stainless faucet (installed about 7 yrs. ago, before I knew of this forum.) Wish I'd gone w/ chrome here, too, as the 2 stainless finishes are different in hue, and it has always bugged me....See MoreIs it sanitary to have trash next to DW?
Comments (11)"Do you have your trash next to your DW, and would you do it again? " Yes and yes. I like it next to the DW as I can easily scrape my plates into in it and then immediately load my dishwasher. As to the relative sanitation concerning the arrangement - I think it pales in comparison to the fact that two teenage boys help me load/unload the DW and set the table even as I have been harping on them to "WASH YOUR HANDS!!" for years after they have come home or walk out of the bathroom and I am still unsure of it's effectiveness. They haven't made anyone sick yet but I honestly try not to think about it much. The DW/trash proximity isn't even on my list of things that concern me at this point. Comments (16)I'm surprised we don't see more sinks on peninsulas facing living areas, worktops under windows, and cooktops on the right angle exterior wall from the window I know - since I essentially designed my own kitchen in my current house (some help from this site), I put the cleanup sink on peninsula facing the dining area, and my workspace under the window. I figure when I am prepping food, it's always daylight out, and sometimes prepping takes longer than cleanup. So, I wanna look out. At the cleanup station - that often happens (in winter) at deep dark night. Plus I can talk to any guests more easily. My arrangement: Fridge (west wall), small prep sink - NOT in front of the window!, prep station range (from right to left on south wall), recyclables and general trash, sink, dishwasher (from right to left on peninsula). Most-used dishes stored an easy reach from DW on north wall. Pots and pans under range or in drawers just to the right of range. Absolutely NO complaints from me in my kitchen arrangement. But my kitchen is semi[open rather than full scale open. You can't see the dirty dishes from the living room, although from the dining area you'd still see them - no matter where they are. Here, code precludes putting a range in front of a window - which I didn't want to do, anyway. I would also never voluntarily put a range on an island or peninsula. There are those who say that putting a DW to the right of the sink is the thing to do for right-handed people. I'd spent the past 30 plus years of my life with preexisting kitchens with one to the left - totally adapted to that, (just as I trained myself to mouse left-handed on computers from the get go of the invention of mouse-operated computers... - leaves my right hand free to scribble notes...) Due to the overall functionality of the house, and that I wanted the dining area to the east - more importantly my master bedroom on the west - (seriously, I thought with retirement I'd be sleeping in a lot more than I do! HAAH!) my cooktop / range is to the LEFT of the prep area / window. And my view / back of the house is to the south....See MoreLayout question - cabinets or shelves next to sink?
Comments (7)Thanks for the inputs - on more than the original question. Yes that's the fridge, and will be built-in and thus door friendly. We could put a prep sink in the island, but my wife prefers without it. We've been in our current home for 10 years with a sinkless peninsula where all the prep gets done; we're not used to prepping at a sink which is why we won't miss it. We've got exactly that much space now on either side of our sink; a dish drain sits over the dw, and the space to the right of the sink isn't used much at all; overflow for dirty dishes after a meal is about it. Every-day dishes will be in the upper to the left of the window; we do need that for storage as it turns out. But we think we can lose the small upper to the right of the sink in favor of 3 shelves to give it a little more openness. (We'll also have a walk-in pantry with plenty of space for less frequently used dishes etc.)...See MoreDesign Loft Bracebridge
