Need advice on best cabinet line!

We have narrowed it down to the following cabinet lines. Pricing is similar except we are getting the Starmark for steal will only be able to afford them for the kitchen. So, I will need a second choice with that option. Which cabinets are the most durable - finish and use wise? We are doing a shaker style in white painted maple. All will be all plywood boxes, dovetail drawers (some difference isn drawer bottom thickness), full extension, full overlay. Thank you!!!

1. Marsh Furniture stock cabinets

2. Starmark custom cabinets

3. Waypoint Living stock cabinets

Shameless bump! We are leaning towards Waypoint because they are about 25% cheaper than the Starmark and they are all plywood construction. Drawers are 5/8" instead of 3/4" but otherwise are nice. They are CARB II compliant - I wish they had low VOC paint finish, but I guess you can't have anything.

I will never use Waypoint/Shenandoah/American Woodmark on another project ever. Terrible finishes, horrible packaging, and slow replacements. I quit using them entirely because they could not get a single order to a job site without damage. And the ones they did, had glue leaking out of where the panels were joined or warped doors that they considered ''cosmetic'' and wouldn't replace. Instead, the install crew had to work extra man hours covering their sorry behinds.

I wouldn't use any of the others either. Not if I had expectations of quality. "Plywood" and "soft close" are buzz words that mean nothing without specifics. Most people have zero discernment about cabinet quality levels and just hear the buzz words.

The lowest level that I would consider is Diamond/Kemper/Schlock, Kraftmaid (not the cheapo entry level line) or Medallion /Schuler, etc. True mid grade lines.

While it sounds like the Fagerland and the Liljestad lines, being solid wood, are the top quality at Ikea, I know that the colors of those two would be too dark for my friend. I am still confused then. Barrelhead - is your posting above of Ikea lines in order of quality? Are the flat panel doors (ie. Nexus, Perfekt and Rubrik) higher quality than the framed doors (like Adel, Askome, Tidaholm)? I am still confused after reading this thread. I've been on the Ikea website and still can't tell what I should look for to get the best quality doors at Ikea. I know Lisaslists says you can tell when you see them, but I am not so sure I will be able to. Amberly said the quality varies quite a bit, and I'll be able to tell when I look at the label. How will I be able to tell? What materials am I looking to find in the label? Or not find in the label? Or if you know of lines that are really the lower-levels, let me know. Thanks everyone.

The ones I am looking at right now are: 1 - Bellmont 1600 2 - Bellmont 1900 3 - Canyon Creek's Katana Line (I wish they had the higher end line up here, they seem much better and very customizable) 4 - Barkers 5 - Durasupreme is here, but I fear it is too spendy. Egads, though, you can notice the difference in heft. I've been afraid to price them. 6 - Brookhaven. I went to Home Depot and learned that Innermost isn't sold in Alaska's HD stores. My research is still so preliminary. But, I'm impressed with the finishes with Bellmont, and that you can mix 1600 and 1900 series to make it more affordable or customizable where you need it. But, so far, Bellmont 1900 is almost twice as much as Barkers with walnut/clearcoat lowers and white painted uppers - and Brookhaven is more than Bellmont, of course. I'm comparing apples to apples as best I can, but it is difficult to really ensure that given how things work in the pricing game. I'm willing to pay more to get what I want and ensure they are good down the road if I have to, but I admit, I'm struggling with how to figure that out.

Need advice - stripping paint along floor line

Maybe hand-scrape with small, very sharp wood scraper. Or sand with a pointed palm sander or oscillating tool. As for how to stain & poly: carefully! I'd maybe tuck a trash bag under the bottom with a putty knife, followed by painter's tape over it to absorb and dry any extra stain that runs down, etc. Then maybe have a 6" drywall knife nearby as you stain to flatten the carpet down if necessary. (Don't forget to wipe off the extra stain per the instructions.) Good luck.

If you choose aluminum clad wood, be aware of the maintenance issues, particularly in certain climates. Years ago, the upper end of some brands of wood casements were made using Douglas Fir. When the casements were left open for long periods of time, the windows failed to close properly. Although I doubt that's an issue at present, it's something you may wish to inquire about. If you're seeking virtually no maintenance, go with fiberglass. It lacks the warmth of real wood, but avoids maintenance on wood sections. W hatever you select, you'll need skilled craftsmen to provide you with superior installation skills. You'll notice that some parts of the country have experienced many more installation problems than others, dependent upon the brand. Marvin appears to have a stellar reputation. I agree with millworkman's rankings. Loewen makes great doors, as well. Research the dealer's/installment team's reputations, as well as the company's customer service/warranty.

Thank you everyone. We decided to forgo all of those cabinet brands and are considering different ones. We actually had the KD send us new doors to see if our daughter reacted to the finishes (all solvent based) and she did. So now we are considering Aya, Executive, and even possibly Ikea cabinets as she has not reacted to those brands....
