Adenium mineral mix for Plumeria, rooted cuttings?

I have two "rooted" cuttings on the way & wonder if using my gritty,
bonsai mix might be right for these? I have lots of pumice, bird grit,
zoelite, etc. around also.

All of my adeniums are in Gritty Mix and I do have some Plumeria in that mix as well.. However I have adapted my own mix using what I have learned with making a well aerated, fast draining mix that works well for my trees..

Like Emily has mentioned, you can make a good fast draining mix that keeps the roots aerated and properly hydrated !!

I haven't personally tried my adenium or plumeria in gritty but some like it and some don't, with the main factor probably being how hot your plants get during the day. I'm in Texas and Kms2 is also, he has tried his plumeria in the gritty and they did not do well, the heat was way too intense for them and he couldn't even get them through a hot summer day without them looking like they were collapsing. Laura in VB (Virginia Beach) has all of hers in pure gritty and they are gorgeous.

You'll have to see what works for you in your area but a well draining mix is the goal - sounds like you are very familiar with well draining given your supplies on hand. I use potting soil, perlite and some compost (basically bark) in my mix. Others will vary their recipe depending on their watering needs & climate. You'll have to experiment / acclimate a bit and keep your eye on the plants to see what they can tolerate.

I'm sure others can offer you some great advice also. Please keep us posted as this is such a common question for a lot of people and I'm sure others can gain a lot from your experience.

I'm 9A and I use regular potting soils and perlite mix. I water it once and don't water again until 4 sets of leaves are out. Bottom heat is important when rooting cuttings. Good luck!

Some clones root easily, some don't...trial and error. Rooting hormone can't hurt. The cut end needs a few days to dry out and form a callous, then it can be placed into a small pot with 100% perlite. It must be warm, over 80F, for decent success. Spray the leaves and stem with water daily, but do not wet the soil otherwise it may rot. Avoid hot direct sun. When you start to see new growth, you can begin watering normally and fertilizing lightly. They can now take more sun. When you are confident that the new roots are established you can repot into normal soil mix. I don't know for sure if they can be rooted directly in water but I would seriously doubt it. It will take many years of good growth for the stem base of a cutting to swell up into a large caudex. Typically the roots will swell and the plant can be repotted to show off the potato-like roots. Seedlings develop a caudex more quickly and reliably than cuttings. I haven't had either long enough to make a personal judgment, however.

My Plumeria rooted within 2 weeks. I was astonished at how fast it had a deep hold in the soil. If it hasn't rooted by now in damp soil, then I would remove the cutting and allow it to dry before planting it again. It only needs a little bit of water. Make sure to use rooting hormone to be on the safe side. The only thing that I can think of that I really did different was putting a light really close to the growth points at the top. The leaves start out as these small green bumps at the top of the stem, and within a few days they were already starting to grow. If it is not too late, I would try that. But be warned, rooting is the easy part. The leaves are very sensitive to temperature drops. One day in the low 50s with my windows open made it loose all its leaves. Hope this helps because these are really cool plants if you can get them to take.

Good morning, today I noticed a root pushing its way through the side of its pot. The seeds sprouted on 7-5. The true leaves are starting, any ideas on how long to wait before transplanting? I was thinking if the roots become entangled in the pot it could be a set back when repotting. Joe

Rooting mix.. I like to have a slight peat base ( Fox Farm ocean Forest, fir bark and perlite ) I like the cup method and water once and set on heat mat..

Here is a pic of my rooting bin as of yesterday..

i cut holes in the bottom of the clear cups for drainage and I use styrofoam to stabilize the cuttings so there isn't any movement while rooting ..

Well, here they are........

my choice was made because I wanted already rooted cuttings. I have two yellow trees in my yard but they are so high that you can't see / small the blooms..... ;-)

I used a denser mix below the plant & roots, then graduated to a grain / mineral mix about half way up. We shall see how it goes. I watered once and will wait maybe another day to water again.
