strange acting oak tree
Comments (19)[I'm reposting this from my account in the hopes that the moderators will be able to delete my prior post that displays my e-mail address.] I found this thread while searching for information on what's going on with my red oak. I live W of Boston and suddenly one of my many red oak trees started dropping leaves from the bottom branches. This morning I watched leaves rain down from the branches when a breeze came through. This has been a very normal summer. While it was hot in July, it's dropped back to seasonable temperatures. We've had over 7" of rain in August and I have a lawn irrigation system that waters the area that the tree is in. I've read the descriptions of SOD and SOW. Both SOD and SOW seems to start at the top, so that doesn't match. I'm stumped. The leaves seem to darken & turn slightly brown & then drop while still green. The tree hasn't been pruned in years and nothing has been done to base in a long time. The hosta probably went in 5+ years ago. I've included a link to a photo album showing a dropped leaf, the base of the tree and the entire tree. Thanks, Geoff Here is a link that might be useful: Tree Photo Album...See MoreBur oak losing leaves
Comments (15)I'm in cedar park and we're loosing leaves on our oaks like crazy, which is in turn making me crazy since the leaves are terrible on sidewalks, and don't break down when they blow under other plants, so you have to go in after them. No large growth spurts, just lots and lots of rain, and a location that doesn't get as much sun as it could. (4-5 hours a day, if we ever get a day with some sun. I'm thinking it's a leaf spot/ rust of some description, because when I sprayed it with ortho, it cleared up briefly, but then with the additional rain it's come back with a vengeance. When we get paid on monday I'm picking up some more Ortho and dousing the heck out of the tree. I've had enough with ugly leaves....See MoreWhite oak with sudden leaf drop (pics)
Comments (6)Thanks to all for weighing in...hard to judge the percentage of leaf drop, maybe 5% but it was strange that it happened so suddenly and concentrated in a 23-36 hr period. After that barely any more but my lawn is littered with leaves. There is some dieback on individual branches, so when you look up at the tree you see a fair number of branches that are bare for about 24 inches. Grass around the tree is fine, 3 other white oaks in the same grouping all in a big hosta bed that is very healthy. The oak is at the back of my 2 acres and the ashes were all lining my lane & drive way at the front of the property, so it's a good distance separating them. The extension service had a bag of leaves they had just received from another local resident with the same problem....white oak, sudden leaf drop, blackened petioles. Their best advice was for both of us send down samples to the University of Illinois Plant Clinic in Urbana to see if they can identify the problem. Comments (27)Hi Nancy, power companies sure have been enforcing their right of ways 'round here since them disasters they had in the 2000's where some folks were w/o power for a week. I hear the state house did not want a whole neighborhood to sue the homeowner who planted the tree which violated the right of way of the lines and brought them down so they compelled Ameren to launch that "Power On" campaign. My big oak (the previous owners planted) even got pruned twice since then. One time I left a case of soda and water out for the guys the other I tried tontip them for cutting back a stump. They refused my money amd hooked me up anyway. I suppose all the open wounds on trees during the wrong time of year very much could invite a sudden oak death or other infection........See MoreAnn Stoneburner
