Magnolia Furniture Line in Missouri

I went to the small town of Desoto, MO today and they had a small store with some of their furniture.

I kept seeing people come in and go to the back of the store. Turns out it is also where people pay their utility bills...at the back of the store. That's when you know you are in a small town :-)

Anyway, the lady said they had just got their first truck load and the majority of it was sold within a day or two. I'll be interested to see what else they get in. I don't think I'll be out that way unless I make a special trip.

There were some nice things and other things that looked nice, but perhaps not as well made as some of the other items. Was very interesting, though, to get ideas.

Here's a few pics. I loved the bed. It reminds me of church pews on the ends.

I'm on the hunt for just the right bench or pew for my entry.

Actually the hardiest cultivars of Southern Magnolia are hardy to temps between -20Â°F(-29Â°C) and -25Â°F(-31.7Â°C). But that's for relatively short periods of time (hours, not days). Protection from winter sun and wind are both important in preventing leaf burning. I think winter sun protection is a little more important with this though. Even though a tree might have lots of leaf burning, it often will not have any stem or wood damage. The ideal spot to plant one in a border line area would be against a NW facing wall, which would give plenty of heat during the summer (plus retain some heat longer into the night during winter) and also afford some winter sun protection since the sun sets in the SW during the winter(in the Northern hemisphere). Some people in zone 5 that try to grow Southern Magnolias many times report they act more like deciduous trees in having most all of their leaves burned off during the winter, but releaf out in the spring and bloom, so no wood damage is done. I grow more than 1 dozen cultivars of Southern Magnolia here in zone 6 KS and none have been killed or had much of a problem with winter hardiness. Even the supposedly less winter hardy cultivar 'Little Gem' grows fine for me. I also know of many decent sized trees(30'-50'(9-15m) tall range) in the Kansas City metro area which have been through their all time record low temp of -22Â°F(-30Â°C) and the very tough, cold winters of the late 1970's and early 1980's. So, I think in general most Southern Magnolias are zone 6 hardy and a few can make it in protected spots in zone 5. Duration of cold is important as is summer heat. If you live in a colder area with abundant summer heat(temps mostly in the 80's(26Â°-31Â°C) or warmer for most of summer), you probably have a better chance at growing Southern Magnolia than an area with little or no summer heat and relatively mild winters.

Let's exhume this thread. I live in Spokane, Washington, zone 6, and the nurseries where I have worked since 2004 have been selling Jury magnolias, starting with 'Black Tulip', then 'Felix', and most recently 'Burgundy Star'. One thing I have noticed about these precocious magnolias is that once they break dormancy, they might as well be tropical. We would bring them in from zone 8 Oregon in bud/bloom, and they would get nailed by a moderate frost. For that reason, we started bringing them in in late summer to overwinter here, and the trees would then come out of dormancy later (only now starting to swell) and bloom later. We have cold nights compared to our days, sometimes 30 degrees cooler at night, and that seems to help hold things back. We INSIST that people who buy these trees site them where they will never see the morning sun and will be protected from wind (especially 'Felix'). I have refused to sell them when I have doubts about the buyer's location. I only know of two times when we have had to credit a customer for a loss, and only one of those was winter damage. The other was because someone forgot to tell the buyer not to mess with the roots much. I think that people who live in climates where winters are relatively mild but have occasional, poorly timed freezes will have a harder time with this group then those of us who have a more consistently cool to cold winter climate where dormancy is prolonged. On a side note, I have a recording of an episode of 'The Victory Garden' dating back to the late 80's (I think) with Peter Seabrook in Dunedin, New Zealand. He's visiting the garden of Nora Dunlop, who shows him her Pieris formosa var. forrestii 'Wakehurst' (zone 7) which was covered with fiery red new growth. He lamented his failures with this plant; the new growth emerging and invariably being burned by frost. That happens in his zone 8/9 garden in England!

I would have inspected the items for durability if I were going to buy, but I didn't.

The chair, IMO, was too wide and not that comfortable. This little chair was more comfortable, but too narrow.

Russell said Magnolia Home furniture will be made
in Vietnam and China and most likely shipped to the Standard Furniture

But, my sister works in a high end furniture store in Maine, and when I would go over to drool at some of the items, I was surprised to find that the high-priced Maitland Smith furniture was made there. This is an article from 2004 about that. Maitland-Smith: Vietnam future bright

I saw an ad on TV the Nebraska Furniture Mart is selling Joanna Gaines Magnolia home furniture....I have not checked it out. Imagine it is the Mart stores in Kansas City and Texas also.
