not bloodroot, but...

Came across this plant while hiking in the early summer woods here in Southern Illinois. It was Memorial Day. We were looking for a springs that supposedly had been used by family members to make moonshine back in the day and while scanning for the seeps I noticed these and realized they were new to me. They initially remind me of bloodroot somewhat but while I have seen bloodroot form colonies, this plant seemed to most commonly appear in twinned pairs like you see here, almost like mayapples. I did not see any flowering structures or seed heads or anything else. They were scattered about but not common at all. I went back to get my phone for the pictures and really had to hunt to find them again. This is a fragmented but high-quality hardwoods parcel of about 60 acres, with some invasives encroachment but fortunately not in the area where these were found. The ground is rolling with dense canopy and rocky sandstone outcroppings in the steeper ravines.
