"Mid-century" rant

I see it most often in the antiques/collectable forum, where someone, probably young, describes something as "mid-century", when it is usually schlock from the 70's or 80's. Now, technically, I guess the time period "mid-century" might be post-war to the 80's, but true MCM is late 30's thru the 60's, I think. The young ones seem to confuse 'mid-century' with real honest collectable MCM.

I guess in the thread about "Classic" trends, we could say that all that is mid-century, which does not make it good. The colored bath tiles, for example, in my new neighborhood of 50-60's traditional homes, fondly known by realtors as ducky yellow, minty green, baby blue and baby pink (often with accents of a darker shade), are all mid-century. Which does not mean good, collectable, or worthy of preservation.

Yes, I know that many people like those things, like the colored appliances and pastel tile, and we can call that appreciation "retro" or something similar.

So forgive my little rant that some people think that "mid-century" means anything good by definition. It's just a time frame.
